Göreme Churches, Castle and Fairy Chimneys
The main sights
Göreme sits inside a UNESCO landscape of volcanic tuff carved into churches, houses and dovecotes. Most of the sightseeing is within a few kilometres of town, with a few stops in the Avanos and Ürgüp areas.
Göreme Open-Air Museum
The museum is about 1.5 km from Göreme village. Its rock-cut churches include Tokalı, Elmalı, Yılanlı, Karanlık (the Dark Church), Çarıklı and St Barbara, among others. Tokalı sits just outside the museum gate. Official hours are daily 08:00 to 17:45, and the ticket office closes at 17:15. A night session runs 18:00 to 23:00, with the ticket office closing at 22:30. Guides quote about EUR 20 for the main site, so check the price at the gate or on the ministry museum page .
The Dark Church
The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) is a separate ticket from the main museum, at about EUR 6 according to guides. A single small window protects the frescoes from light. Pass coverage differs between sources, so ask what your pass includes before you rely on it.
Uçhisar Castle
A tall rock outcrop honeycombed with rooms, Uçhisar Castle is about 5 km from Göreme toward Nevşehir. It has its own ticket, at roughly 400 TL according to guides, and the Museum Pass is said not to cover it.
Paşabağ (Monks Valley)
Paşabağ is known for its double and triple-headed fairy chimneys. It is a short stop and a good photo spot.
Zelve Open-Air Museum
Zelve is an abandoned cave village in the Avanos area, not in Göreme itself. It needs a separate ticket, about EUR 12 to 15 according to guides. Reported winter hours are 08:00 to 17:00 from 31 October to 31 March, and summer hours run 08:00 to 19:00.
Devrent Valley and Love Valley
Devrent Valley has fairy chimneys shaped like animals and lies near Ürgüp, off the Avanos road. Love Valley has viewpoints over its rock pillars, and the walk is free.
Ordering the stops
The Open-Air Museum, the Dark Church and Tokalı can fill a morning together, since they are in one place. Uçhisar Castle and Paşabağ fit an afternoon on the same road, and Zelve and Devrent suit a separate northern outing with Avanos.
Etiquette and care
Do not use flash in the painted churches or touch the frescoes. Stay off the fairy chimneys, and keep out of the dovecotes. Prices are in Turkish lira, though guides often quote euros for foreign visitors.
