Gyumri With Children: Puppets and Museums
Gyumri is a quiet city for families rather than an amusement destination. There are no water parks, beaches or adventure sports, and the good options for children are indoors: a puppet theatre, a museum with a model of the old town and a gallery that runs clay workshops. Plan short visits, add a park stop between them and keep prices in mind: they are quoted in Armenian dram (AMD) and may change.
Gyumri Puppet Theatre
The Gyumri Puppet Theatre, named after Stepan Alikhanyan, is at 133/6 Abovyan St and was founded in 1935; it is said to be Armenia’s first puppet theatre. The mus.am listing gives opening hours of Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, and tickets of 500 to 1,000 AMD. Shows are in Armenian but visual, which suits younger children. Ask at the box office which performance is on, since show times change.
Dzitoghtsyan Museum
The Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life at 47 Haghtanak Ave sits in an 1872 merchant mansion, and its model of old Alexandropol is the part school-age children tend to remember. Children under 12 enter free; the adult ticket is about 1,500 to 2,000 AMD and also covers the Merkurov House-Museum in the courtyard. Opening is most days, about 11:00 to 17:00.
Aslamazyan Sisters Gallery
The gallery at 242 Abovyan St is a good stop for children who like colour and drawing; under 6 enter free, and entry is 1,000 AMD for foreign adults. The gallery has run ceramic painting sessions where children decorate tiles, at about 3,000 to 5,000 AMD per child with a booking. Ask the gallery to confirm the next session before you plan around it.
Park time
Central Park lies between Gorki and Sayat-Nova streets and was laid out in the late 19th century as the city’s municipal garden. It is shaded and easy to reach on foot from Abovyan Street, and it is a convenient place for a snack and a rest between museum visits.
Not on the list
Online listings sometimes name a Gyumri zoo. The private zoo closed in 2016, and the animals went to Yerevan Zoo and a wildlife refuge, so there is no zoo to visit.
Practical tips for children
- At about 1,550 m, summer sun is strong: bring hats and sunscreen. Winters are cold and snowy.
- Cobbled streets in the old town ice over in winter and are uneven at other times, so bring shoes with grip.
- The Kumayri streets are flat and compact, and the core sits within about 1.5 km.
- A Russian military base sits beside the Black Fortress, so do not photograph military sites.
- Carry a passport if you drive west towards the Turkey border.
- Use Yandex Go or GG for taxis and agree the fare first.
