Things to Do in Göreme
Göreme at a glance
Göreme is a small town in Nevşehir Province in central Anatolia, at about 1,100 m. It sits inside the area UNESCO inscribed in 1985 as Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia , a mixed natural and cultural site. Most visitors stay in a converted cave house, and nearly everything in this list starts within walking distance of the village or a short ride from it.
Hot-air balloon flights
Balloons over the valleys at dawn are the signature Göreme experience, and you can watch them from almost anywhere in town even if you never book a flight. The Turkish civil aviation authority, SHGM, regulates every flight, so pick a licensed operator with a good record. Flights only go when conditions allow, and the regulator can ground every balloon in the region on a given morning. Press reported multi-day suspensions in February and March 2026, so plan 2 or 3 mornings of buffer and prefer an operator that refunds or rebooks when weather cancels the flight. Ballooning depends on the wind, and a flight is never a guarantee.
Valley walks
Rose Valley (Güllüdere), Red Valley (Kızılçukur), Pigeon Valley (Güvercinlik Vadisi) and Love Valley (Bağlıdere) are free to walk and can be reached on foot from town. Pigeon Valley runs between Göreme and Uçhisar. The tuff underfoot is soft and crumbly, and trails can be loose or slippery, so wear sturdy shoes and carry water. Do not climb on fairy chimneys or go into the dovecotes carved into the cliffs.
Göreme Open-Air Museum and the Dark Church
The museum is about 1.5 km from the village and holds rock-cut churches with painted frescoes. Official hours are daily 08:00 to 17:45 with the ticket office closing at 17:15, and there is a separate evening session from 18:00 to 23:00. Check the current price at the gate or on the ministry page . The Dark Church (Karanlık Kilise) has its own ticket. Do not use flash or touch the frescoes.
Horse riding and quad tours
Many Göreme operators sell horse rides and quad (ATV) tours through the valleys, and they advertise helmets and a briefing. Look for an operator that supplies helmets and whose horses visibly look healthy and rested, and ask what the briefing covers before you pay.
Paragliding and dinner
Tandem paragliding is sold from Aşıklı Hill with pickup from Göreme. In the evening, try testi kebabı, the pottery kebab cooked in a sealed clay pot that the waiter breaks open at your table.
