Three or Four Days in Göreme
Göreme works as a base, not a tour
Göreme does not have a long list of formal multi-day tours. What it offers is a good base for 3 or 4 days, with day outings radiating from one cave hotel. That suits the region well: most sights are within a short drive, and staying put avoids repacking. This page sets out one way to use the time.
Getting in and out
Nevşehir Kapadokya airport (NAV) has AJet flights from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen and Turkish Airlines flights from Istanbul Airport, according to Wikipedia . The drive to Göreme is roughly 35 to 40 km. Kayseri Erkilet airport (ASR) is roughly 75 km away, and long-distance buses reach the village. Many visitors pre-book a shuttle, and shuttle times are a guide only.
Day 1: Settle in and walk
Arrive, check in and take a short walk to a valley edge or the village viewpoints. Save energy for the next day. If your hotel is a converted cave house, ask about the room layout and stairs, since cave houses vary.
Day 2: Balloon morning and the Open-Air Museum
Plan a dawn balloon flight on the first morning you can, with a spare morning in reserve. Flights run only when conditions allow, and the regulator can ground every balloon in the region, so 2 or 3 mornings of buffer is sensible. Choose a licensed operator that refunds or rebooks on weather grounds. After a rest, visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum, which is about 1.5 km from the village and open daily 08:00 to 17:45.
Day 3: Underground city and Ihlara
Join a Green Tour or hire a driver for a southern day: Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı underground city, then the Ihlara Valley canyon walk and Selime Monastery. Wear shoes with grip and bring water.
Day 4: Valleys and Uçhisar
Walk Rose Valley to Red Valley in the late afternoon for the sunset light, or Pigeon Valley toward Uçhisar. If a balloon morning was cancelled earlier, use the extra morning for it now. Uçhisar Castle is about 5 km from Göreme and has a separate ticket.
What to leave out
Antalya, Salda Lake and other coastal or lake trips are hundreds of kilometres away and do not belong on a Göreme itinerary. Zelve Open-Air Museum is in the Avanos area, not in Göreme, so give it a place on a northern day only if you have time.
