Self-Guided Walks in Gyumri Old Town
Gyumri is a good city for walking: the historic core sits within about 1.5 km of Vardanants Square, the streets are flat and the museums sit along three parallel streets. Two self-guided routes cover most of it, one through the old town and one up the western ridge. No permit or ticket is needed for the streets, and a guide is optional.
Route 1: the Kumayri circuit (about 2.5 km, 2 to 3 hours)
- Start at Vardanants Square, with its two black tuff churches and the Mamikonian monument. The earthquake memorial stands behind Holy Saviour Church; pause there quietly, as it honours the people who died in 1988.
- Walk north on Abovyan Street, the cobbled main promenade, past 19th-century mansions, wrought-iron lamps and carved wooden gates. The Aslamazyan Sisters Gallery is at No. 242.
- Turn west to Rustaveli Street, where red and black tuff paving has been restored. The Mher Mkrtchyan Museum is at No. 30; look for metal craft studios along the street.
- Head south to Varpetats Street, named for the writers who lived there. The Avetik Isahakyan House-Museum is at No. 91 and the Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum at No. 101.
- Return east along Gorki Street, where quiet courtyards have decorative masonry arches and stone bas-reliefs, to reach Central Park.
Museum hours and prices are on mus.am . The Mkrtchyan museum is closed on Sundays, so plan the order of visits around opening days.
Route 2: the western ridge (about 2.5 km each way)
From Vardanants Square, head west about 2.5 km uphill to the Black Fortress, built from 1834 to 1847 from black tuff. Walk around the perimeter, then follow the ridge path to the Mother Armenia statue of 1975. The views over the low stone rooftops and east to Mount Aragats are best in the late afternoon. The hill is open ground, and a taxi from the centre saves a long climb; let the driver know where you will walk down.
A Russian military base lies next to the fortress. Do not photograph military sites, facilities, vehicles or the perimeter fence.
Walking safely
- Wear sturdy shoes: flagstones and cobbles are uneven.
- In winter, black ice forms quickly on stone steps. Traction soles help from December to February.
- Stray dogs live on the edges of the city, so keep to well-lit central streets after dark.
- Summer sun is strong at 1,550 m; carry water and sun protection.
Guided options
Museum excursions run at the house-museums; prices and languages are listed on mus.am. Ask your hotel to find a local guide for the old town, and agree the fee and route beforehand.
