Two to Three Days Based in Gyumri
Gyumri suits a stay of two to three nights: the old town needs one to one and a half days, and the monasteries and viewpoints around it fill the rest. Beyond that, the city is a gateway north to Lori and Georgia. Multi-day options are limited to what the roads and rail allow, and this page lays out realistic plans. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov for current Armenia advice before you go.
Two days in and around Gyumri
Day 1: take an early train from Yerevan, with times at railway.am (07:55 arrives at 11:03; on Friday to Sunday the express leaves at 09:15 and arrives at 11:25). Walk the old town from Vardanants Square along Abovyan, Rustaveli and Varpetats streets, visit the Dzitoghtsyan Museum and one house-museum, then go up the western ridge in late afternoon for the Black Fortress and Mother Armenia statue.
Day 2: take a taxi to Marmashen Monastery, about 10 km north-west, then continue by taxi or direct bus to Harichavank, about 4 km from Artik. Return to Yerevan by the evening train (18:15 from Gyumri, arriving about 21:23) or by road.
A three-day loop through Shirak and Lori
Day 1: the old town and a craft stop, with a visit to a forge or the mushurba workshop arranged ahead.
Day 2: a morning at Yererouk basilica near Anipemza, carrying your passport because the site lies beside the closed Turkey border. Add the Ani viewpoint at Haykadzor, which is free and open to all. Continue east across the Pambak range through Spitak, a town where the 1988 earthquake memorials call for a quiet stop, and on to Vanadzor.
Day 3: the monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat in the Debed gorge are UNESCO World Heritage sites. From there you can return to Yerevan or continue north.
Where to stay
Berlin Art Hotel, at 25 Haghtanak Ave, is a boutique hotel within walking distance of the museums. Heating matters from November to March, when the plateau is cold and snowy.
Onward to Georgia
The Bavra to Ninotsminda border crossing lies about 50 km north of Gyumri, roughly an hour by road, and leads to the Javakheti plateau and on towards Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe. Shared vans and taxis run between Gyumri and Ninotsminda. Check the current crossing rules and Vardzia opening times before you plan around them.
Trips that do not fit
Tatev, Lake Sevan, Akhtala and Odzun are each over about three hours from Gyumri in each direction. If you want them, plan them from Yerevan as separate trips rather than adding them to a Gyumri stay.
Money and logistics
Carry cash in AMD for city marshrutkas, market stalls and rural taxis; cards work at hotels and museums. For taxis, use Yandex Go or GG and agree the fare and waiting time first. Shirak International Airport, 5 km south-east of the centre, takes a few international flights.
