Guided Tours and Boat Trips in Dili
Dili has a short list of organised tours, and it is better to know that before you arrive. There is no large coach-tour industry and no big set of packaged sightseeing products. What exists is a handful of guided visits at the memorial museums, boat trips for whales and dolphins, and day trips to Atauro Island run by dive operators. All of it is small-scale and most of it is arranged directly.
Guided visits at the memorial museums
The Chega! Exhibition, in the former Comarca Balide prison, offers guided tours that can be booked at the centre. A phone number is listed, +670 331 0465, and the centre is open Monday to Friday, with entry free. The Comarca was built in 1963 under Portuguese rule and held Timorese political prisoners during the Indonesian occupation. Later the truth commission CAVR used it between 2001 and 2005. Today it holds exhibition panels on the occupation and the commission’s findings, plus an archive.
The Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum on Rua Formosa also offers guided tours. It is open Tuesday to Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday, and entry is a few dollars. Both places are run by Timorese institutions and deal with a painful period, so go with a quiet mind and modest dress. Confirm opening hours before you travel.
Whale and dolphin boat trips
Whale season runs roughly from August to November for blue and sperm whales on the official tourism site, and from September to December for pygmy blue whales in press reports. Spinner dolphins are seen daily off the north coast. Operators listed include Compass Diving, Dive Timor Lorosae and Moby Wildlife Tours in Dili. Prefer an operator that follows the national whale-watching guidelines. Prices vary, so ask for a quote when you enquire.
Dive operator day trips to Atauro
Several dive operators run day trips to Atauro Island, and Atauro is the part of the coast the official tourism site leaves out of its crocodile warning. Operators on the island include Atauro Dive Resort, Compass Diving and Beni-Marine, with community snorkel trips through ATKOMA. The public ferry is a cheaper way across: the Berlin Nakroma costs US$4 each way and runs on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. See the official ferry page for the current schedule. You can also compare boat trips and snorkel tours from Dili before deciding.
Booking and events
Book museum guides directly with the museums rather than through a tour company. For events, the official calendar lists the Timor-Leste Coffee Festival in November 2026, with the date still to be confirmed. For other sights, such as Cristo Rei and the Tais Market, a taxi and a good pair of shoes are enough. Ask your hotel to arrange a driver and agree the fare first.
Practical points
Pay in US dollars, in small notes, because cards are limited. Check the UK travel advice before you go, and avoid protests and crowds.
