Göreme With Kids and Teenagers
A family-friendly base
Göreme is compact, and several of its best sights cost nothing. The terrain is the main thing to plan around: the local rock, tuff, is soft and crumbly, paths can be loose, and some spots have steep drops. Hold young children’s hands near edges and keep everyone off the fairy chimneys.
Watch the balloons rise
You do not need to book a flight to enjoy the balloons. At dawn they lift off over the valleys, and hilltops around town give a free view. Go early, bring layers, and plan it as a short outing. If you do want a flight with children, ask the operator about any age or height limits first, choose a licensed operator, and keep in mind that flights are cancelled when the weather is wrong.
Devrent Valley
Devrent is known for fairy chimneys that look like animals, so children can look for the animal shapes in the rock. It is near Ürgüp, off the Avanos road, and fits easily into a half-day outing. Stay on the paths and do not climb the rocks.
Pottery in Avanos
Avanos is a pottery town on the Kızılırmak river. Studios there offer demonstrations on a kick wheel, which children usually enjoy watching. Opening hours and workshop times vary, so ask at the studio before you go. Press has also reported 15-minute gondola rides on the river, so check whether they are running now.
Göreme Open-Air Museum
The museum is about 1.5 km from the village and holds rock-cut churches with painted walls. Expect uneven steps and dim interiors, so it suits older children better than toddlers. Flash is not allowed, and children should be reminded not to touch the frescoes. It is open daily from 08:00 to 17:45, and the ticket office closes at 17:15. Entry prices are best checked at the gate or on the ministry’s museum page .
Kaymaklı Underground City
Kaymaklı has 8 levels in total, with 4 open to visitors. The passages are low and narrow, and it is not suitable for very young children or for anyone who is claustrophobic. Older children who like caves often enjoy it, but stay together on the lit route.
Practical tips
Bring water, hats and sun protection in summer, and shoes with good grip. A rest afternoon at your hotel after an early balloon morning keeps a family trip calm. Check current government advice before you travel, such as the UK travel advice for Turkey .
