Surabaya in 7 Days: An Itinerary

Seven days is the full version: the city core, the complete Bromo-Ijen circuit, and two genuinely different final days, a cooler hill city and an island across the strait, rather than a rushed return home straight off a volcano hike.

Day 1: Heroes history
The Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) and the 10 November Museum beneath it cover the 1945 Battle of Surabaya. Walk to Jalan Tunjungan and the 1911 Hotel Majapahit, site of the flag-tearing incident that preceded the battle. Dinner: rawon, rated the world’s best soup by TasteAtlas in 2024, for roughly Rp 30,000-50,000.
Day 2: Old Town and food
Morning at the House of Sampoerna, then Kampung Ampel, the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel Mosque and tomb; cover shoulders and knees. Afternoon at the Al-Akbar Mosque, its 99-metre minaret. Dinner: rujak cingur or lontong balap, both Surabaya originals, for around Rp 20,000-35,000.
Day 3: Mount Bromo
Depart late (usually 11pm-midnight) via Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang, then a 4x4 across the Sea of Sand caldera to the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) for sunrise over Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, and a roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim. Bring a warm layer. Back in Surabaya by mid-to-late afternoon, roughly Rp 800,000-1,500,000 per person (verify current rates).
Day 4: On to Banyuwangi and the Ijen trailhead
Transfer toward Banyuwangi by train from Surabaya Gubeng or by road, arriving near the Ijen trailhead by evening. Rest through the daylight hours; the hike starts in the middle of the night.
Day 5: Kawah Ijen and the blue fire
The hike to the crater rim takes roughly 2 hours before dawn, with a further 45-minute descent for those viewing the “blue fire,” ignited sulfuric gas, up close. A gas mask is standard advice for the descent. After sunrise over the turquoise crater lake, transfer back toward Surabaya.
Day 6: Malang and Batu
A cooler hill city at 440-667m elevation, roughly 2-2.5 hours from Surabaya, Malang preserves Dutch Gothic-style landmarks from its colonial-era popularity as a climate retreat; Batu next door is its theme-park satellite. Hire a driver or join a day tour rather than the drive yourself. After three straight days of volcano logistics, treat this as recovery with sightseeing attached.
Day 7: Madura, across the Suramadu Bridge
At 5.4km, Indonesia’s longest bridge, free to cross since 2018, links Surabaya to Madura island. Depending on the season (roughly July-October), you may catch Karapan Sapi bull racing, bulls yoked to wooden skids racing about 130m in a genuine local tradition, or simply take in the salt production and Madurese satay before heading back for your last night in Surabaya.
