Surabaya: Where to Stay by Area

Be realistic about how you’ll actually use a Surabaya hotel room: most visitors overnight here once or twice before or after Bromo or Ijen, rather than treating the city as a multi-night destination in its own right. Pick your area based on that.
Central Surabaya, Tunjungan and the CBD
The city’s main commercial and mall district, home to the House of Sampoerna and the historic Hotel Majapahit, is the practical default base: central, well served by hotels across every budget, and walkable-ish to the Old Town. If you’re only in Surabaya for a night either side of a volcano trip, this is the easy choice.
Near Surabaya Gubeng station
A sensible base if you’re planning a rail day trip or onward journey, toward Malang or toward Banyuwangi for Ijen, for the simple convenience of walking to the station rather than fighting traffic to it with luggage.
Old Town, Ampel-Chinatown
Atmospheric and heritage-rich, with Sunan Ampel’s tomb and colonial-era streets on your doorstep, but genuinely grittier and less polished than the CBD. Better for sightseeing during the day than as a base, unless that gritty, lived-in character is exactly what you’re after.
Mall clusters, HR Muhammad and Darmo
Modern, business-traveler-oriented areas further from the Old Town sights but well connected by Grab and Gojek. Worth it if you’re here for work rather than sightseeing, or want a quieter, more residential feel at night.
The one named heritage property
Hotel Majapahit, an MGallery property, is the single well-documented named heritage hotel in the city: opened in 1911 as the Hotel Oranje, the site of the 1945 flag-tearing incident that preceded the Battle of Surabaya, restored and reopened in 1996. Beyond it, book by zone and current ratings rather than chasing a specific name.
