Surabaya in 2 Days: An Itinerary

Two days is genuinely enough for two things: a real feel for Surabaya’s Heroes-history identity and Old Town, and a single overnight run out to Mount Bromo, the volcano trip most visitors are actually here for. It’s tight, but it works if you accept that day 2 starts before midnight.

Day 1: Heroes history and the Old Town
Start at the Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument), the 41-metre pillar marking the Battle of Surabaya, and the 10 November Museum beneath it for the photographs and dioramas explaining why 10 November is a national holiday here. Walk to Jalan Tunjungan and the 1911 Hotel Majapahit, where Indonesian youths tore the blue stripe from a Dutch flag in September 1945, a flashpoint that preceded the battle by six weeks.
In the afternoon, head to the House of Sampoerna, a Dutch colonial compound turned kretek (clove cigarette) factory and museum, with a hand-rolling demonstration floor and a café. From there it’s a short trip north into Kampung Ampel, the Arab Quarter built around the Sunan Ampel Mosque and tomb, one of the Wali Songo saints; cover shoulders and knees, and expect the lanes to fill for Friday prayers.
For dinner, find a warung serving rawon, the black beef soup coloured by keluak nut and rated the world’s best soup by TasteAtlas in 2024, for around Rp 30,000-50,000 a bowl. Book your Bromo jeep tour for tonight before you sit down to eat: most operators collect from central Surabaya hotels around 11pm-midnight.
Day 2: Mount Bromo, overnight round trip
Your tour picks up late (usually 11pm-midnight) for the roughly 3-4 hour drive to Cemoro Lawang village via Probolinggo. A 4x4 jeep then crosses the Sea of Sand caldera to the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) for sunrise over Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, followed by a roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim itself. It’s genuinely cold at altitude, so bring a warm layer even though Surabaya never needs one. Group tours run roughly Rp 800,000-1,500,000 per person depending on operator and season (verify current rates), and most get you back to Surabaya by mid-to-late afternoon.
Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before you book, not just before you go, since tours sell out faster in dry season (June-September) when the sunrise views are clearest.
Is 2 days enough for Surabaya?
It’s enough to say you’ve seen both sides of what makes this city worth the stop: the history and food in the city itself, and the volcano trip that’s the real draw.
