Surabaya: Hidden Gems Worth Seeking Out

Most visitors who make it to Surabaya at all go straight from the Heroes Monument to Bromo. That leaves a handful of genuinely worthwhile stops that don’t make the standard checklist.
Jembatan Merah, the Red Bridge district
Named for the colonial-era bridge itself, this old commercial quarter near the port sits alongside Jalan Tunjungan as part of what locals still call “Old Surabaya.” It gets a fraction of the foot traffic of Ampel or Chinatown, which is exactly why it’s worth a wander if you want the colonial architecture without the crowds.
Kenjeran and Sanggar Agung
Kenjeran Beach, on the eastern coast, is mostly known locally rather than internationally, and it’s home to the Sanggar Agung Chinese-Buddhist temple and its giant seaside Guan Yin statue, a genuine Surabaya landmark that rarely makes first-timer itineraries (verify exact height and date on the ground). Go on a weekday if you want it without the local crowds.
Trowulan, an hour out and underrated
The archaeological site believed to be the capital of the Majapahit Empire until 1478 spans roughly 100 square kilometres, with the Bajang Ratu and Wringin Lawang gates, the Tikus bathing pool, and a dedicated museum. It’s on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list, gets far fewer visitors than Borobudur or Prambanan, and sits close enough to Surabaya for a genuine day trip (verify current road time, commonly cited around 1-1.5 hours).
The Suroboyo Bus’s bottle-fare quirk
Surabaya’s city bus rapid-transit system, launched in 2018, was originally payable with plastic bottles, exchanged at drop-off points for ride credit via an app, alongside QRIS and e-money now. It runs four fixed corridors and is a genuinely useful, cheap way to link the Heroes Monument to the House of Sampoerna corridor without a Grab fare, if your route lines up with one of them.
