Four days gives you the full city core, the Bromo trip, and a fourth day to spend somewhere genuinely different: the cooler hills of Malang and Batu, a real change of pace after a pre-dawn volcano hike.

Day 1: Heroes history
The Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument), a 41-metre pillar marking the 1945 Battle of Surabaya, and the 10 November Museum beneath it anchor the morning. Walk to Jalan Tunjungan and the 1911 Hotel Majapahit, site of the September 1945 flag-tearing incident that preceded the battle by six weeks. Dinner: rawon, the black beef soup rated the world’s best soup by TasteAtlas in 2024, at a warung for roughly Rp 30,000-50,000.
Day 2: Old Town and food
Morning at the House of Sampoerna, a colonial compound turned kretek factory museum, then Kampung Ampel, the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel Mosque and tomb; cover shoulders and knees. Afternoon at the Al-Akbar Mosque, Indonesia’s second-largest, with its 99-metre minaret. Dinner: rujak cingur or lontong balap, both Surabaya originals, for around Rp 20,000-35,000.
Day 3: Mount Bromo, overnight round trip
Your jeep tour departs late (usually 11pm-midnight) for the roughly 3-4 hour drive via Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang. A 4x4 crosses the Sea of Sand caldera to the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) for sunrise over Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, then a roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim. Bring a warm layer; it’s genuinely cold at altitude. Tours run roughly Rp 800,000-1,500,000 per person (verify current rates), back in Surabaya by mid-to-late afternoon. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before booking.
Day 4: Malang and Batu
A cooler hill city at 440-667m elevation, roughly 2-2.5 hours from Surabaya, Malang preserves Dutch Gothic-style landmarks from its colonial-era popularity as a climate retreat; neighbouring Batu is its theme-park and resort satellite. Hire a driver or join a day tour rather than attempting the drive yourself if you’re not used to Indonesian traffic. It’s a genuinely different pace after two intense volcano-adjacent days, worth treating as a rest day with sightseeing attached rather than another early start.
Is 4 days enough for Surabaya?
Four days covers the city, Bromo, and a real change of scenery without attempting Ijen, which needs its own overnight near Banyuwangi and works better with a fifth day. See our 5-day itinerary for the full Bromo-Ijen circuit.
