Surabaya: Hiking Areas (It's Bromo and Ijen)

Be honest about what Surabaya is before you go looking for trailheads: it’s a flat, hot, spread-out port city with no in-town hiking to speak of. The actual hiking, and it’s genuinely excellent, sits a few hours out, at the two volcanoes that draw most visitors here in the first place.
Mount Bromo’s Sea of Sand and Penanjakan climb
Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, sits inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, and the hiking here happens in two stages. Most people take a 4x4 jeep across the Sea of Sand, the caldera-floor plain, to the Penanjakan sunrise viewpoint (2,770m), reachable on foot in about 2 hours if you’d rather walk than ride. From Cemoro Lawang village, the crater rim itself is a roughly 45-minute walk, moderate rather than technical, but genuinely cold before dawn even though Surabaya never is. Bring a warm layer regardless of how hot the city felt the day before.
Kawah Ijen’s crater-rim hike
Ijen’s hike is steeper and starts later at night: roughly 2 hours up to the crater rim for the pre-dawn “blue fire,” sulfuric gas igniting in the dark, then a further 45-minute descent to the crater bank for those viewing it up close. This is the one hike on this list with a genuine safety point attached: the crater vents toxic sulfuric gas, and a gas mask is standard advice for anyone doing the full descent.
Malang and Batu’s cooler hills
If altitude and pre-dawn starts aren’t what you’re after, Malang, roughly 2-2.5 hours from Surabaya, sits at 440-667m and offers a milder, walkable hill-city alternative with none of the volcano logistics, colonial architecture rather than crater rims.
Getting there
None of these run on public transport from Surabaya. Organised jeep tours handle Bromo; Ijen typically means a train or long drive to Banyuwangi first, with an overnight stay before the hike. See our Surabaya day trips guide for the full logistics on both.
Season matters more than fitness level
Dry season, roughly June-September, is what actually determines whether these hikes deliver: clear skies for the Bromo sunrise and unobstructed Ijen crater views. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before committing to either trip, regardless of season.
