Surabaya in 5 Days: An Itinerary

Five days is the first length where Ijen is realistic alongside Bromo. Kawah Ijen is genuinely farther than Bromo and needs its own overnight near the trailhead, so this itinerary treats Bromo and Ijen as a single 3-day circuit rather than two separate day trips.

Day 1: Heroes history
The Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument) and the 10 November Museum beneath it cover the 1945 Battle of Surabaya, the bloodiest early battle of Indonesia’s independence struggle. Walk to Jalan Tunjungan and the 1911 Hotel Majapahit, site of the flag-tearing incident that preceded the battle. Dinner: rawon, the black beef soup rated the world’s best soup by TasteAtlas in 2024, for roughly Rp 30,000-50,000.
Day 2: Old Town and food
Morning at the House of Sampoerna, then Kampung Ampel, the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel Mosque and tomb; cover shoulders and knees. Afternoon at the Al-Akbar Mosque, its 99-metre minaret symbolising the 99 names of Allah. Dinner: rujak cingur or lontong balap, both Surabaya originals, for around Rp 20,000-35,000.
Day 3: Mount Bromo
Depart late (usually 11pm-midnight) for the roughly 3-4 hour drive via Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang. A 4x4 crosses the Sea of Sand caldera to the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) for sunrise over Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, then a roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim. Bring a warm layer; it’s cold at altitude even though Surabaya never is. Back in Surabaya by mid-to-late afternoon, roughly Rp 800,000-1,500,000 per person (verify current rates).
Day 4: On to Banyuwangi and the Ijen trailhead
Rather than returning fully to Surabaya, transfer toward Banyuwangi, either by train from Surabaya Gubeng or by road, arriving at a guesthouse near the Ijen trailhead by evening. Use the daylight hours to rest properly: the Ijen hike starts in the middle of the night.
Day 5: Kawah Ijen and the blue fire
The hike to the crater rim takes roughly 2 hours, starting well before dawn, with a further 45-minute descent to the crater bank for those viewing the “blue fire,” sulfuric gas igniting in the dark, up close. The crater vents genuinely toxic sulfuric gas; a gas mask is standard advice for the descent. After sunrise over the turquoise crater lake, transfer back to Surabaya (a long travel day; verify current options, as some travelers instead fly out of nearby Banyuwangi airport).
Is 5 days enough for Bromo and Ijen?
Five days is the minimum that does both volcanoes justice without a rushed overnight sprint. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status for both Bromo and Ijen before you book. For a gentler alternative that skips Ijen for a highland day trip instead, see our 4-day itinerary .
