Three days splits cleanly: one day for the Heroes-history core, one for the Old Town and food, and one overnight run to Mount Bromo. It’s the sweet spot for seeing Surabaya properly without cutting the volcano trip short.

Day 1: Heroes history
Start at the Tugu Pahlawan (Heroes Monument), a 41-metre pillar unveiled in 1952 marking the Battle of Surabaya, the bloodiest early battle of Indonesia’s independence struggle in 1945. The 10 November Museum beneath it covers the fighting in photographs and dioramas, and 10 November is now the national Heroes’ Day holiday. Walk to Jalan Tunjungan, the city’s grand Dutch-era street, and the 1911 Hotel Majapahit, where Indonesian youths tore the blue stripe from a Dutch flag in September 1945, a direct flashpoint for the battle six weeks later. For dinner, a warung serving rawon, the black beef soup rated the world’s best soup by TasteAtlas in 2024, runs roughly Rp 30,000-50,000 a bowl.
Day 2: Old Town and food
Spend the morning at the House of Sampoerna, a Dutch colonial compound turned kretek factory museum, with a hand-rolling demonstration floor and a cafĂ©. Walk north into Kampung Ampel, the Arab Quarter around the Sunan Ampel Mosque and tomb, one of the Wali Songo saints; cover shoulders and knees. In the afternoon, the Al-Akbar Mosque, Indonesia’s second-largest, has a 99-metre minaret symbolising the 99 names of Allah. For dinner, try rujak cingur or lontong balap at a street stall, both Surabaya originals, for around Rp 20,000-35,000.
Day 3: Mount Bromo, overnight round trip
Your jeep tour picks up late (usually 11pm-midnight) for the roughly 3-4 hour drive via Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang village. From there, a 4x4 crosses the Sea of Sand caldera to the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) for sunrise over Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, followed by a roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim. Bring a warm layer, it’s genuinely cold at altitude. Group tours run roughly Rp 800,000-1,500,000 per person depending on operator and season (verify current rates), returning you to Surabaya by mid-to-late afternoon. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before booking.
Is 3 days enough for Surabaya?
Three days covers the city properly and gets you to Bromo without rushing either. It’s not enough for Kawah Ijen as well, which needs its own overnight near Banyuwangi; for that, see our 5-day Bromo-Ijen itinerary . For a gentler add-on instead, our 4-day itinerary folds in a Malang and Batu day trip.
