Surabaya: Best Day Trips (Bromo, Ijen)

There’s no direct public transport from Surabaya to either Bromo or Ijen, so every option below runs on an organised tour or a private driver rather than a bus you can just walk up to. That’s the honest trade-off for what is genuinely East Java’s best scenery, well outside the city itself.
Mount Bromo, the marquee trip
Gunung Bromo, 2,329m, is an active volcano inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, rising out of the Sea of Sand, a caldera-floor plain protected since 1919. The standard route is Surabaya to Probolinggo (about 3-4 hours by road), then on to the gateway village of Cemoro Lawang, followed by a pre-dawn 4x4 jeep to the Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770m) for sunrise, then either a jeep or a roughly 45-minute walk to the crater rim itself. The indigenous Tenggerese hold the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony here, throwing offerings into the caldera. Check current PVMBG volcano-alert status before booking; Bromo’s last recorded eruption was December 2023.
Kawah Ijen, farther but worth it
Ijen, on the Banyuwangi border, pairs a turquoise, highly acidic crater lake with the “blue fire,” sulfuric gas igniting in the dark, best seen on a pre-dawn hike (about 2 hours up, 45 minutes further down to the crater bank). It’s genuinely farther than Bromo, usually reached via Banyuwangi by train or a long drive with an overnight stay before the hike, and often combined with Bromo as a multi-day circuit rather than attempted alone from Surabaya. The sulfur gas is a real hazard: a gas mask is standard advice for the crater-rim hike, and the miners hauling loads up the slope work in genuinely dangerous conditions worth witnessing respectfully rather than treating as a photo op.
Madura island
The free Suramadu Bridge, at 5.4km Indonesia’s longest, crosses to Madura, known for Karapan Sapi bull racing (roughly July-October, with a championship final in Pamekasan), salt production, and its own satay style. Driving across for the view alone is a reasonable half-day option even without continuing further onto the island.
Trowulan, the Majapahit capital
Trowulan is the archaeological site believed to be the capital of the Majapahit Empire until its 1478 fall, spanning roughly 100 square kilometres with the Bajang Ratu gate, the Wringin Lawang gate, the Tikus bathing pool, and a dedicated museum. Road time from Surabaya is commonly cited around 1-1.5 hours (verify current timing).
Malang and Batu
A cooler hill city at 440-667m elevation, roughly 2-2.5 hours from Surabaya, Malang drew Dutch colonial residents for its climate and preserves Dutch Gothic-style landmarks; neighbouring Batu is its cool-climate satellite of theme parks and resorts. It’s a full-day trip rather than a rushed half-day given the drive.
