7 Days: Sydney and Beyond
Seven days runs the full 6-day spine, Sydney, Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Royal National Park and the Grand Pacific Drive, then fixes the one honest weak point: Port Stephens gets an overnight instead of a rushed there-and-back. Same trip, one extra day, spent where it actually matters. Tighter schedule? The 6-day version does the same day trip without the extra night.

Day 1: Land and settle into Sydney
Check in and get oriented; save the deep city sightseeing for a dedicated visit and our Sydney 7 day itinerary .
Day 2: Blue Mountains
Central to Katoomba direct, about two hours by NSW TrainLink, roughly 9-10 AUD one-way. Echo Point and the Three Sisters, inside the Blue Mountains National Park , are free; the Scenic World pass, about 55 AUD adult, adds the Railway, Skyway and Cableway.
Day 3: Hunter Valley wine country
Two to two and a half hours by car, or a guided wine tour . Public transport runs three to four and a half hours, impractical for one day.
Day 4: Royal National Park
Train to Cronulla plus a roughly 30-minute ferry to Bundeena, about an hour and a half door to door, or an hour by car. Free on foot; a 12 AUD vehicle entry fee applies if you drive in. Check the ferry timetable both ways on transportnsw.info before you leave.
Day 5: Grand Pacific Drive and Wollongong
The drive starts about 45 minutes south at the Royal National Park entrance, crosses the 665-metre Sea Cliff Bridge, and reaches Wollongong roughly 90 minutes out. No public transport covers the actual drive, a rental car or a tour is the only way to do it.
Day 6: Port Stephens, arrive and cruise
Drive two and a half to three hours north to Port Stephens , branded “Dolphin Capital of Australia” for its 140 to 200-plus resident bottlenose dolphins. Check into Nelson Bay by early afternoon, take a roughly ninety-minute dolphin cruise, then sandboard the dunes before dinner. Staying overnight here, instead of driving back the same evening, is the entire point of doing this on day seven rather than day six.
Day 7: Port Stephens morning, then back to Sydney
Sleep in for once, no two-and-a-half-hour drive waiting at the end of yesterday. Spend the morning on Nelson Bay’s marina, a second cruise if the dolphins didn’t show well the day before, or more time on the dunes, then drive back to Sydney in the early afternoon.
Why does the 7-day version handle Port Stephens differently than the 6-day one? Because it can afford to. Six days forces a same-day return, a genuinely long ten to twelve hour day. Seven days adds one night in Nelson Bay, turning the same drive into two relaxed half-days instead of one exhausting one.
Is one extra day enough to justify the overnight? Yes, if Port Stephens is on your list at all. The alternative, cramming it into a single day, means arriving tired for a dolphin cruise and driving the last two and a half hours home in the dark. One added night fixes both problems for the cost of one hotel stay.
Book the Nelson Bay stay before the dolphin cruise; cruise slots are more flexible than a same-night hotel room during school holidays and long weekends.
