Day 1: Land and settle into Sydney
Check in and get oriented rather than rushing a sightseeing list; the Sydney 3 day itinerary covers the deeper city version of this day if you’re doing a separate city-only trip later. A short Circular Quay walk covers the harbour view for free.
Day 2: Blue Mountains
The NSW TrainLink Blue Mountains Line runs Central to Katoomba direct in about two hours, roughly 9-10 AUD one-way on Opal or contactless. Echo Point and the Three Sisters lookout, inside the Blue Mountains National Park , are free; add the Scenic World Unlimited Discovery Pass, about 55 AUD adult, for the Railway, Skyway and Cableway. Check the line timetable so your return train lines up with dinner back in Sydney.
Day 3: Hunter Valley wine country
Budget two to two and a half hours by car, or book a guided wine tour if you’d rather not designate a sober driver for a day built around cellar-door tastings. Public transport here is genuinely impractical, a train-plus-bus combination runs three to four and a half hours, so a rental car or a tour is the real choice.
Is Hunter Valley worth it without a car? Only with a tour. The train-and-bus option eats most of the day before you’ve tasted anything. A day tour, around three and a half hours each way including stops, or a self-drive with a designated driver, are the two options that actually work.
Do you need three separate days, or can you combine any of these? Keep them separate. The Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley sit in different directions from Sydney and both eat a full day round trip; trying to combine them means arriving at each one late and rushed.
Book the Hunter Valley tour before you land if your dates include a weekend; vintage-season tours (roughly February-March) sell out furthest ahead.
