Sydney 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)
Seven days is our 6-day plan , harbour, Bondi, the zoo, Darling Harbour, Manly, Newtown and Surry Hills, plus a buffer day that most guides skip entirely: markets, a second beach, and enough runway to reach the airport without a scramble.
Book these before you go:
- A Sydney hotel near Circular Quay or the CBD : rooms near the harbour sell out first in summer
- Sydney Opera House guided tour : morning slots go first
- Sydney Harbour ferry and Taronga Zoo Express combo : weekend summer sailings fill early
- Darling Harbour combo pass : cheaper than booking each attraction separately
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Circular Quay, Opera House tour, Harbour Bridge, The Rocks |
| 2 | Bondi Beach and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk |
| 3 | Taronga Zoo via the Zoo Express ferry combo |
| 4 | Darling Harbour and Chinatown |
| 5 | Manly ferry and the northern beaches |
| 6 | Newtown and Surry Hills |
| 7 | Buffer day: markets, Coogee, and the airport |
Day 1: Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Bridge
Book the Opera House’s official guided tour ($48-50 adult, via the box above) for the morning, then explore The Rocks. Walk the free Harbour Bridge pedestrian path, or pay roughly $25-30 for the Pylon Lookout rather than BridgeClimb’s $328+. Close through the free Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.
Day 2: Bondi Beach and the coastal walk
Bus to Bondi, swim between the flags, then walk the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk: 6 kilometres, 2-3 hours, free, past Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay.
Day 3: Taronga Zoo across the harbour
The 12-minute Taronga Zoo ferry is worth it alone. The Zoo Express combo (book it through the box above) runs roughly $67-70; ride the cable car up, walk down through the koalas and platypus enclosures, current hours and prices at taronga.org.au .
Day 4: Darling Harbour, without overpaying for it
A combo pass across two or more (book it through the box above) at SEA LIFE, WILD LIFE, Madame Tussauds and the Tower Eye claims up to 50-60% off buying separately. Chinatown’s Dixon Street dumplings beat the waterfront restaurants for dinner.
Day 5: Manly and a first look north
The Manly ferry is a flat $8.39 under the same Opal fare system as every ferry on the network, and the 30-minute crossing beats most paid harbour cruises for free. Walk the Corso between the ocean beach and the harbour side, then the Manly to Spit Bridge walk if there’s time.
Day 6: Newtown and Surry Hills
Train 10 minutes to Newtown for King Street’s Thai, Korean, Indian and vegan-strong food scene, then Surry Hills’ Crown Street for the city’s most consistent modern Australian and Vietnamese kitchens. Expect $20-35 a person casual, $50-80+ for a proper dinner, in either.
Day 7: Markets, Coogee, and getting to the airport without stress
Spend the morning at whichever market fits the day: The Rocks Markets run Saturdays only, Paddy’s Market in Haymarket runs Thursday through Sunday and is the better bet regardless of your departure day. If a beach still calls, Coogee is a shorter trip than Bondi from the CBD and makes a quieter final swim than repeating day two.
How much airport buffer does a seven-day Sydney trip actually need? At least three hours before an international flight. Sydney Airport’s international terminal backs up during morning departure banks, and the two airport stations carry their own access fee, about $17.92 on top of the standard train fare, so a taxi or rideshare, typically $35-55 from the CBD, is worth comparing against the train once you’re carrying luggage on a tight schedule. Whichever way you go, don’t let the fee catch you off guard on the one ride you can’t avoid.
