Sydney 5 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Day 1: Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Bridge
Book the Opera House’s official guided tour ($48-50 adult, via the box above) for the morning, then explore The Rocks. Walk the free Harbour Bridge pedestrian path in the afternoon, or pay roughly $25-30 for the Pylon Lookout rather than BridgeClimb’s $328+ full climb. Finish through the free Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.
Day 2: Bondi Beach and the coastal walk
Bus to Bondi, swim between the flags, then walk the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk: 6 kilometres past Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay, 2-3 hours, free, and still the best value stretch of hours in the whole trip.
Day 3: Taronga Zoo across the harbour
The 12-minute Taronga Zoo ferry from Circular Quay is worth the ticket alone. The Zoo Express combo (ferry, entry, cable car, book it through the box above) runs roughly $67-70; ride up, walk down through the koalas, wombats and platypus enclosures, current hours and prices at taronga.org.au .
Day 4: Darling Harbour, without overpaying for it
SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, Madame Tussauds and the Sydney Tower Eye all sit within a few minutes’ walk. A combo pass across two or more (book it through the box above) claims up to 50-60% off buying separately; the free Australian National Maritime Museum covers the day if you’d rather skip the tickets entirely. Dinner in Chinatown, Dixon Street’s dumplings and yum cha beat the waterfront restaurants on price and speed both.
Day 5: Manly and a first look north
The Manly ferry from Circular Quay is a flat $8.39 under the same Opal fare system as every other ferry on the network regardless of distance, and the 30-minute crossing past the Opera House and under the Bridge outperforms most paid harbour cruises for free. Manly itself splits into the ocean-facing surf beach and the calmer harbour side around Manly Cove; walk the pedestrianised Corso between them.
Is it worth continuing north past Manly? With a spare afternoon, yes: Freshwater, Curl Curl and Dee Why string along the coast by bus, each with a distinct character, from Freshwater’s sheltered shallows to Dee Why’s more consistent surf. Otherwise, the Manly to Spit Bridge walk (about 10km, 3-4 hours through harbourside bushland) is the better use of the time, and a bus brings you back from the Spit Bridge end. Fresh fish and chips on Manly’s East Esplanade beat the tourist strip along the Corso for dinner before the ferry back.
