Kids Junction, Mystic Mountain, Blue Hole Mineral Spring, Island Routes, Prospect Plantation: all real Jamaican names, none of them actually family attractions inside Runaway Bay. Mystic Mountain and the Blue Hole are in Ocho Rios, 25 km east; Prospect Plantation sits further along the same road. A family itinerary built around this coast works better once you drop the imported list and use what is actually here. The genuine standout is Franklyn D.

Nine Mile is the one Runaway Bay day tour worth the mountain road, and it is also the one people underestimate the drive time on. Bob Marley was born here, in the Saint Ann interior about an hour south via Brown’s Town and Alexandria, and he is buried in a marble mausoleum beside his half-brother Anthony Booker. A resident Rastafarian guide walks visitors through the two-room childhood home, the “Mount Zion Rock,” and the mausoleum itself, where shoes come off at the door and photography is banned inside, no exceptions.

The Runaway Bay Golf Club shows up on almost every “adventure sports” list for this coast, and it closed years ago, folded into the surrounding resort’s redevelopment. Do not plan a round here; it is not walkable, drivable, or bookable anymore, whatever an old listing claims. What actually delivers adrenaline is underwater. Wall diving is the real signature sport: S.C.U.B.A. Jamaica , a five-star PADI operation at Franklyn D. Resort, runs boat dives to The Canyon, two parallel coral walls narrowing to under 20 feet apart that start at 35 feet and drop past 130, and to the Spanish Anchor, an 18th-century relic at 50 feet sitting atop a wall that continues past 150.

Seven Mile Beach and Boston Bay show up constantly in “Runaway Bay” write-ups, and neither one is actually here. Seven Mile Beach is in Negril, close to two hours west; Boston Bay is in Portland parish, on the opposite side of the island. Runaway Bay’s real geography is narrower and less famous, and that turns out to be the point. The real anchor is Green Grotto Caves , a limestone cave system sitting right on the line between Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay.
