Jamaica Day Trips from Each Resort Hub
Travel advice: Jamaica has high rates of violent crime, concentrated in inner-city areas rather than the resort strips, and the UK FCDO advises avoiding buses at night and isolated beaches. The US State Department lists the country at Level 2. The west and the south coast are still recovering from Hurricane Melissa (October 2025). Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before planning drives.
Jamaica is about 235 km long and up to 80 km wide, but mountain roads make journeys slower than the map suggests. The workable day trips stay within one region and leave the long hauls for overnight stays. Times below are rough, so add a buffer for traffic and bad roads.
Montego Bay to Falmouth
Falmouth is about 35 minutes from Montego Bay. Spend the day on Martha Brae bamboo rafting (75 minutes, daily 9:00 to 16:00) and walk the Georgian town centre, then take a Luminous Lagoon boat in the evening if the night is dark. Falmouth’s cruise port reopened on 2 December 2025.
Ocho Rios hub
Dunn’s River Falls, Mystic Mountain, Green Grotto Caves and the Blue Hole (also called Island Gully Falls) are all near Ocho Rios. At the Blue Hole, optional jumps are on offer, so judge the water and your own ability. From Montego Bay it is about 105 km, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way, which makes a long day. Staying in Ocho Rios is easier. Dunn’s River is about US$25 for a non-resident adult.
Kingston to Port Royal
Port Royal sits across Kingston Harbour and is reached by road, because the passenger ferry no longer runs. Fort Charles dates from the late 1650s, and the Giddy House, an 1888 artillery magazine, tilted in the 1907 earthquake. Admission is reported at about US$15 for adults and US$8 for children, with hours of 9:00 to 17:00. Get back to your hotel before dark. Kingston has inner-city areas named in the advisories, so use a hotel-arranged or JTB-approved taxi.
Kingston to the Blue Mountains
The hills above Kingston offer the Holywell recreation area and coffee estates; hours at estates vary, so call first. Blue Mountain Peak (2,256 m) is not a casual day trip. The standard route is 9.3 km each way from the Abbey Green trailhead, about 7 hours round trip, with a start just after midnight for sunrise. The trail fee is US$20 for visitors. Trail conditions after the hurricane are unconfirmed, so contact the Blue and John Crow Mountains park managers first. Bring a warm jacket and a raincoat.
The south coast loop
From Negril or Montego Bay, operators sell one long day that links YS Falls, Appleton Estate and a Black River boat tour. YS Falls is about 1.5 to 1.75 hours each way. Both Appleton and the Black River boats are rebuilding after the hurricane, so confirm they are running. Floyd’s Pelican Bar, a boat ride of about 10 minutes from Parottee Point in St Elizabeth, adds more driving; bring cash and check it is open.
Portland from Port Antonio
Rio Grande bamboo rafts run from Berridale or Grant’s Level down to Rafters Rest, taking 2 to 3 hours. The rates set in September 2023 were J$12,000 for the long trip and J$10,000 for the short trip per raft, and may have risen. Pay only at the Rafters Rest or Berridale offices. Reach Falls is about 45 minutes east of Port Antonio, open Wednesday to Sunday, 8:30 to 16:30, at US$10 for adults and US$5 for children. Its reopening after the hurricane is unconfirmed, so phone 876-276-8663. Frenchman’s Cove has been reported at about J$2,000 entry.
Trips that do not fit in a day
Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston cannot be combined in one day, as the driving alone is over 10 hours. Kingston to Pelican Bar and Montego Bay to Port Antonio are also overnight distances.
