Runaway Bay for Families
Kids Junction, Mystic Mountain, Blue Hole Mineral Spring, Island Routes, Prospect Plantation: all real Jamaican names, none of them actually family attractions inside Runaway Bay. Mystic Mountain and the Blue Hole are in Ocho Rios, 25 km east; Prospect Plantation sits further along the same road. A family itinerary built around this coast works better once you drop the imported list and use what is actually here.
The genuine standout is Franklyn D. Resort & Spa , which includes a certified “Vacation Nanny” with every family booking, no upcharge, from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily. That is roughly 8 hours of dedicated childcare, pool and beach supervision, and help with excursions, a structurally different offer than a shared kids’ club running scheduled sessions. Older kids can also work toward a junior PADI certification through the resort’s on-site dive center.
Green Grotto Caves is the other must-do, suitable from around age 4 up. Hard hats and headlamps go on for the 45 to 60 minute guided walk through the 1,525-meter cave system, past roosting bats and stalactite formations, down to the underground Grotto Lake. Roughly 65 steps lead down to the lake, worth knowing before you bring a stroller.
Cardiff Hall Beach, better known locally as Flavours Beach, is free, shallow, and calm enough for younger kids, with shade and food on-site. For something wetter and more active, River Rapids Jamaica runs family-graded tubing on the Rio Bueno’s Class I rapids, rated for kids aged 5 and up with a guide, life jackets required. Book the Rio Bueno tubing trip if you want the water-park energy without an actual water park.
Which brings up the one correction worth repeating: Jewel Lagoon Water Park is closed, not temporarily, not worth checking on. Sandals bought the whole Jewel Runaway Bay property in 2020 for a full redevelopment into Beaches Runaway Bay, still not finished as of 2026. Ten minutes west in Discovery Bay, Puerto Seco Beach Park is the real substitute: a gated beach club with a freshwater pool, a floating Wibit inflatable course, cabanas, and a restaurant, open 8:30 AM to 5 PM for about US$20 adult and US$10 child.
Verdict: book FDR if hands-off childcare matters more than anything else on the trip; book a standard resort and add Green Grotto plus Puerto Seco as day activities if it does not.

Pack water shoes for both the beach and the river; Jamaica’s shorelines and riverbeds here are rockier underfoot than they look in photos.
