Jamaica Multi Day Trips by Region
Travel advice: Jamaica has high rates of violent crime, mostly in inner-city areas rather than the resort areas, and both the UK FCDO and the US State Department (Level 2) name places to avoid, among them parts of Kingston, Spanish Town, Montego Bay and Savanna-la-Mar. All the western parishes were badly damaged by Hurricane Melissa (October 2025), and some communities still lack power or piped water. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov first.
Jamaica works best as a base or two rather than one long loop. Roads are narrow in places and unlit at night, journeys take longer than the distances suggest, and the FCDO advises against buses after dark. Pick one or two regions and stay a few nights in each. Tourism restarted officially on 15 December 2025, but services in the west and south vary, so confirm each hotel and attraction before you commit.
Kingston and the Blue Mountains (2 to 3 nights)
Spend a day in Kingston at the Bob Marley Museum (Home Tour US$25 for adults) and the Tuff Gong studio tour, then add Port Royal. Use a hotel-arranged or JTB-approved taxi around the city, since some inner-city areas are named in the advisories.
For the hills, Whitfield Hall, a hostel and coffee farm in St Thomas, needs a 4WD vehicle, not an all-wheel-drive car, from Mavis Bank or Hagley Gap. Papine to Mavis Bank takes about an hour, and Mavis Bank to Whitfield Hall about another hour. The operator quotes US$120 one way for 1 to 6 people from Papine. The Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust also offers cabins at Holywell and Portland Gap.
Blue Mountain Peak is 2,256 m. The standard route is 9.3 km each way from the Abbey Green trailhead via Portland Gap, about 7 hours round trip, and visitors pay a US$20 trail fee. Guests who sleep at Portland Gap start about 3:30 for sunrise. Trails may be damaged after the hurricane, so confirm conditions first.
South coast and Treasure Beach (2 to 3 nights)
A south coast stay can include YS Falls, Appleton Estate, a Black River Safari boat tour and Floyd’s Pelican Bar, a short boat ride from Parottee in St Elizabeth. This part of the island is still recovering, and services are reduced in places. Black River town is being rebuilt, and nothing here should be assumed to be back to normal. Pelican Bar was rebuilt after the hurricane; bring cash.
North coast: Montego Bay, Falmouth and Ocho Rios (3 to 4 nights)
Rose Hall, Martha Brae rafting and Luminous Lagoon are the Montego Bay and Falmouth anchors, and Dunn’s River, Mystic Mountain and Chukka’s Seville Outpost are the Ocho Rios ones. Montego Bay to Falmouth is about 35 minutes, and Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is about 105 km, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Knutsford Express links the towns; see the branch list and check its fares.
Portland and Port Antonio (2 to 3 nights)
Portland offers Rio Grande bamboo rafting, Reach Falls (Wednesday to Sunday; phone 876-276-8663 to confirm it has reopened) and Boston Bay, the traditional home of jerk cooking. Check which jerk stalls are trading before you go.
Negril (2 to 3 nights)
Negril has two parts: the Seven Mile Beach strip, about 7 miles (11 km) long, and the West End cliffs. Long Bay Beach Park charges non-residents about US$3 (children US$1) and opens daily 9:00 to 17:00. Rick’s Cafe is open noon to 22:00 daily with live music and no cover charge. People jump from its cliffs and injuries are reported, so watch from the terrace. Several Negril hotels reopened between December 2025 and mid-2026, so check each property directly. Avoid isolated beaches.
Combining regions
Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston do not fit into a single day. Montego Bay to Negril is about 80 km, roughly 1.5 hours. Compare accommodation on Booking.com and ask each property about hurricane repairs.
