What to Actually Do in Runaway Bay
Seven Mile Beach and Boston Bay show up constantly in “Runaway Bay” write-ups, and neither one is actually here. Seven Mile Beach is in Negril, close to two hours west; Boston Bay is in Portland parish, on the opposite side of the island. Runaway Bay’s real geography is narrower and less famous, and that turns out to be the point.
The real anchor is Green Grotto Caves , a limestone cave system sitting right on the line between Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay. The cavern runs 1,525 meters and drops to an underground lake used as the villain’s lair in the 1973 Bond film Live and Let Die, with nine bat species roosting overhead and a use history that runs from Taino settlement through Spanish refuge to a WWII smugglers’ store. Admission is US$20 adult, US$10 child, guided walk included, hard hats provided.
Offshore, S.C.U.B.A. Jamaica , based at Franklyn D. Resort, runs boat dives to The Canyon and the Spanish Anchor, two wall sites where the drop starts around 35 to 50 feet and continues past 130. Visibility is best from mid-December to mid-April; the rainy season from June to November clouds the same water considerably. Snorkeling the shallower inner reef works straight off Cardiff Hall Beach, no boat required.
Cardiff Hall Beach, known locally as Flavours Beach, is free, shallow, and shaded, with a beach bar serving Red Stripe and fried fish. For a proper sit-down dinner, Sharkies in Salem does whole snapper and, seasonally, garlic lobster, at tables set right on the sand. Jamaica bans lobster sales entirely from April 1 to June 30 each year, so do not expect it on the menu during that window regardless of what a restaurant used to serve.
If a bigger day trip is the goal, Dunn’s River Falls and the rest of Ocho Rios sit 25 km east, not in Runaway Bay itself. Compare Dunn’s River day tours from Runaway Bay rather than assuming the falls are a short walk from your resort; they are not.
Getting here means Montego Bay’s airport, about 1 hour 15 minutes by road, or Ian Fleming International near Ocho Rios, 45 minutes away and now served by daily American Airlines flights from Miami as of the airline’s December 2024 upgrade from twice-weekly service.
Verdict: Green Grotto plus a reef dive or snorkel is the single best full day this coast offers on its own; treat everything else, Dunn’s River included, as a deliberate day trip rather than a local sight.

Keep small JMD bills on hand for the beach changing-room fee; card readers are rare outside the resorts themselves.
