Romantic Jamaica: Couples Rafts and Sunsets
Travel advice: Jamaica has high rates of violent crime outside the resort strips, and the UK FCDO also reports rape and sexual assault in tourist areas, including beach resorts, often by someone met socially. The US State Department lists the country at Level 2. Western Jamaica, including Negril and Montego Bay, is still recovering from Hurricane Melissa (October 2025). Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go.
Jamaica’s romantic side is a short list of experiences rather than a ready-made couples’ circuit. There are a few good evenings and a long beach, and the rest is down to where you choose to stay. This guide names no hotels or couples’ resorts, because several in the west reopened between December 2025 and mid-2026 and each one should be checked directly. Compare stays on Booking.com and ask each property about repairs, power and water.
A bamboo raft for two on the Martha Brae
The operator markets the Martha Brae ride as a romantic float for couples. The trip lasts 75 minutes over 3 miles, with a licensed captain steering a 30-foot bamboo raft, and each raft takes two adults. Rafts leave daily from 9:00 to 16:00, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay near Falmouth. The water is flat and quiet, with no rapids. The operator publishes no per-raft price, and reseller packages with transport run roughly US$90 to US$180 per person. See the operator’s FAQ .
Sunset at Rick’s Cafe, Negril
Rick’s Cafe on the West End cliffs opened in 1974 and is open noon to 22:00 every day, with live music and no cover charge. It is a good place for a drink at sunset. People jump from the cliffs and injuries are reported, so stay on the terrace and watch the divers. See the cafe’s site .
Rose Hall Haunted Night Tour
The Haunted Night Tour at Rose Hall Great House near Montego Bay runs Wednesday to Saturday, with tours between 18:00 and 20:00. Adults pay US$35, and reservations are required. The Witches Brew cocktail at the Dungeon Bar is not included, and the tour takes 45 to 60 minutes. Transport is not provided, and photos and video are not allowed in the house. The house is not wheelchair accessible and is not suited to people with back problems. Details are on Rose Hall’s site .
Beaches and a rum tasting
Seven Mile Beach in Negril is about 7 miles (11 km) of sand. Long Bay Beach Park, a public access point, charges non-residents about US$3 and is open daily 9:00 to 17:00. Appleton Estate in St Elizabeth runs a rum tour with a tasting, Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 15:30. It was among the hardest-hit estates in the area, so phone 876-448-2237 to confirm it is running.
Luminous Lagoon after dark
Evening boats leave Glistening Waters Marina in Falmouth for a short trip of about 30 to 45 minutes. The glow is best on dark nights and much weaker under a bright moon, so check the lunar calendar. Reseller packages with transfers run roughly US$90 to US$185.
Staying safe as a couple
Use Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) approved taxis with a photo-ID driver, and avoid isolated and deserted beaches. Use licensed activity providers, do not share your room number, and take cash out in daylight. A polite, firm “no, thank you” is enough for street hawkers along the beach.
