Where to Stay in Guilin: Best Areas

Guilin or Yangshuo isn’t really an either-or decision, most trips base in both. The choice that actually matters is which part of Yangshuo: West Street is the loudest, most convenient, and worst option if you want to be up early for a terrace sunrise.
Guilin city centre: the transport hub, not the highlight
Standard hotel pricing, convenient for the airport, train stations, and in-city sights like Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill. It’s the practical choice for a first or last night, less atmospheric than either Yangshuo option, and there’s no strong reason to spend more than one or two nights here unless the in-city sights are your main draw. Yangshuo West Street: convenient, and loud until 2am
Dorms run ¥25-60, mid-range rooms ¥50-120, and you’re steps from the cruise piers and every restaurant and shop in town. The trade-off is real: bar noise carries for a full block and doesn’t quiet down until around 2am. Great for nightlife, a genuinely bad choice if you’re trying to catch a sunrise the next morning.
Yangshuo countryside guesthouses: the quieter real pick
4-8km outside town, ¥35-250+ a night depending on how much view and comfort you want, and none of West Street’s noise. This is the better base if cycling the Ten-Mile Gallery, the Yulong River, or an early Moon Hill climb is actually the point of your trip, rather than being able to walk to a bar at midnight. Longji village stays: overnight is the point
Staying in Ping’an or Dazhai/Jinkeng isn’t a compromise, it’s the near-universal recommendation, since the terraces only really pay off at sunrise or sunset and both are 2-2.5 hours from Guilin each way. Ping’an has more eating options and easier paths; boutique guesthouses there run roughly ¥250-430 a night, with a handful of lodges up to ¥1,450 or more. Dazhai/Jinkeng is more rugged, with guesthouses from roughly ¥250-290 a night. Book a room with a terrace view specifically; that’s the entire reason to stay the night. Check Longji guesthouse availability ahead of golden-season weekends, since the view rooms sell out first.

Whichever area you pick, Alipay or WeChat Pay with a linked foreign card covers most bookings and on-the-ground payments; carry some RMB cash as backup, since small guesthouses in Longji villages aren’t always smooth with foreign wallets. One concrete move: if you’re only picking one Yangshuo base, choose the countryside over West Street unless nightlife is genuinely a priority, an extra 10-minute ride into town is a smaller cost than losing sleep every night.
