Guilin 7 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Seven days is the 6-day plan plus a slow, cheap final day, the free ancient town at Daxu, rather than a rushed second attraction added just to fill the calendar. Less time, the 2 through 6-day plans end after the Longji sunrise. This is the honest ceiling before a Guilin trip starts padding itself with thinly sourced day trips.
Book these before you go
- The Li River cruise ticket (3-star, Mopanshan Pier), especially April-November, when it sells out days ahead.
- A Longji terrace guesthouse in Ping’an, ahead of golden season (late September-mid October) especially.
- Impression Sanjie Liu tickets, if you want the evening river show worked into day 2, 3, or 6.
- Hotels anywhere near Golden Week (1-7 October, 1-5 May 2026): book weeks ahead or find everything sold out.
Day 1: Guilin city, done properly and no more
Reed Flute Cave (¥90 adult, one ticket variant shows ¥82, confirm at the gate) early, before the coach groups. Elephant Trunk Hill (¥55) next, just as recognizable from the free riverside path if the ticket feels steep. Mifen for lunch, ¥3-10 a bowl, at a counter with no English menu. In the evening, the Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise (¥210 adult, departs Wenchang Bridge 18:45 or Yuren 19:30, about 90 minutes) is worth the detour, and includes a staged cormorant-fishing show, watch it as theater.
Day 2: the Li River cruise to Yangshuo
Both piers sit roughly 27-28km outside central Guilin, factor the transfer in. Book the 3-star cruise from Mopanshan Pier (¥215/adult) over the 4-star Zhujiang Pier option (¥360-480); the karst between Yangdi and Xingping looks the same either way. It’s one-way downstream only, 3.5-5 hours. Ignore the “upper deck upgrade” touts at the pier. Walk West Street after dark, but skip the English-menu beer fish right on it and confirm the per-catty price if you eat there anyway.
Day 3: Yangshuo’s countryside, not another boat
Rent a bike (¥15-50/day) for the Yulong River ride, rice paddies, water buffalo, stone bridges. For a cheaper river outing than the cruise, Yulong bamboo rafting is the standard substitute, ¥200-320 per raft, not per person. Moon Hill’s price and hours weren’t reliably confirmed at research time, check locally first.
Day 4: Xingping, on foot
A bus from Yangshuo (about 30 minutes, ¥15) reaches Xingping’s old town, founded 1506, without the cruise’s fixed schedule. Yellow Cloth Shoal, about 500m downstream, is the real view printed on the ¥20 note, free roadside, an elevated platform costs ¥5-10 for the framed shot. Laozhai Hill is a free 30-minute climb for a river-bend view if there’s time before the bus back.
Day 5: up to Longji, overnight in Ping’an
Budget around two hours from Guilin or Yangshuo to Ping’an, the easier of Longji’s two terrace areas, versus roughly 2.5 hours to the wilder Dazhai/Jinkeng side. The combined ¥80 ticket covers both plus Huangluo Yao Village. Spend the afternoon on Ping’an’s marked paths, terraces hand-built by Zhuang and Yao communities roughly 650-700 years ago. Stay the night in a village guesthouse; withdraw cash before you arrive, foreign-card ATMs thin out fast up here.
Day 6: sunrise, then back down
Get to a viewpoint before first light, the Ping’an loop takes about two hours round trip, then descend and head back toward Guilin or Yangshuo. Dazhai/Jinkeng’s platforms are a separate overnight, not a same-day add-on to Ping’an. Back by evening, an Impression Sanjie Liu show (tiered ¥200-680) is a reasonable close if you haven’t seen it yet.
Day 7: Daxu, and an easy end
Daxu ancient town, about 20km south of Guilin, is free and genuinely old, a 2.5km bluestone street with Ming and Qing buildings and the Qing-era Wanshou Bridge, not a rebuilt tourist set. Buses run from Guilin South Bus Station (roughly 08:20 and 13:00, 30 minutes, ¥10). If the market days (dates ending 2, 5, or 8) line up with your visit, it’s busier and better for produce and street food. With a spare hour before your flight or train, this is a calmer close than cramming in one more paid sight; check 12306 or Trip.com for your onward schedule the night before.

Compare guesthouse and hotel rates on Booking.com for each stop, availability in Ping’an and around Golden Week is thinner than a standard Guilin or Yangshuo hotel search suggests. The concrete call for seven days: stop here. Sanjiang’s Dong villages and the Ziyuan Danxia formations get pitched as natural next add-ons, but the distances and fees from Guilin weren’t reliably confirmed at research time, confirm both before building a day around them.
