Guilin 3 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Three days is the city, the cruise, and a real day in Yangshuo’s countryside, not just a transfer through it. Short on time, the 2-day plan drops the countryside day. More time, the 4-day adds Xingping, and the 5 through 7-day plans add a Longji terrace overnight.
Book these before you go
- The Li River cruise ticket (3-star, Mopanshan Pier), especially April-November, when it sells out days ahead.
- A Longji terrace guesthouse, if you’re extending past day 3 for the overnight.
- Impression Sanjie Liu tickets, if you want the evening river show worked into day 2 or 3.
- Hotels anywhere near Golden Week (1-7 October, 1-5 May 2026): book weeks ahead or find everything sold out.
Day 1: Guilin city, done properly and no more
Reed Flute Cave (¥90 adult, one ticket variant shows ¥82, confirm at the gate) first, before the midday coach groups arrive; a 20°C illuminated limestone cave, bring a layer. Elephant Trunk Hill (¥55) next, the arch that gives the hill its name, at the Li and Taohua Rivers’ confluence, honestly just as recognizable from the free riverside path if you’d rather skip the ticket. Mifen for lunch, ¥3-10 a bowl, at a counter with no English menu, not a sit-down spot near the ticketed sights, the noodles don’t change, the markup does. In the evening, the Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise (¥210 adult, departs Wenchang Bridge 18:45 or Yuren 19:30, about 90 minutes) covers the illuminated old-city loop and the Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas. It includes a staged cormorant-fishing show, treat it as theater, it’s a paid demonstration today, not a working trade.
Day 2: the Li River cruise to Yangshuo
Both piers sit roughly 27-28km outside central Guilin, so build in the transfer. Book the 3-star cruise from Mopanshan Pier (¥215/adult) over the 4-star Zhujiang Pier option (¥360-480); the karst between Yangdi and Xingping looks the same from either boat, the extra ¥145-265 buys a meal and a nicer deck, not better scenery. It’s one-way downstream only, 3.5-5 hours, ending near Yangshuo’s West Street. Ignore the “upper deck upgrade” touts at the pier, seating is randomly assigned. Walk West Street after dark, when it’s most atmospheric, but skip the English-menu beer fish restaurants directly on it and confirm the per-catty price before the fish goes in the pot if you eat there anyway, a block off the strip is cheaper for the same dish.
Day 3: Yangshuo’s countryside, not another boat
Rent a bike (¥15-50/day) and ride out to the Yulong River, past rice paddies, water buffalo, and stone bridges, the same karst the cruise sold you, minus the schedule, and free once you’re past the rental fee. If Moon Hill’s on your list, budget 1-1.5 hours for the roughly 1,000 steps to the arch (price and hours weren’t reliably confirmed at research time, so check locally before you go rather than trusting an old listing). For a cheaper river outing than the Li River cruise, Yulong bamboo rafting is the standard substitute, ¥200-320 per raft, not per person, confirm which before you pay.
