Where to Eat in Guilin (Skip West St)

Guilin’s two signature dishes, rice noodles and beer fish, are cheap and excellent when you eat where locals do, and one of them has a genuine scam pattern attached when you don’t. West Street’s restaurants push English menus and inflated seafood pricing at anyone who looks like a tourist; a five-minute walk off it gets you the same food for a fraction of the price.
Guilin mifen: ¥3-10, and it’s everywhere
Rice noodles in a spiced meat gravy, lushui, built on star anise, cinnamon, monk fruit, pork or beef, either dry-mixed with peanuts and pickled bamboo shoots or served in broth. The dish carries national intangible-cultural-heritage status , a genuine credential, not tourism copy. The signature local variant is horse-meat rice noodles. Youyi Xuan, founded 1896, is the best-known horse-meat house and worth seeking out for that alone. Chongshan Rice Noodles runs about ¥14 a person for a full bowl, and Laodongjiang Rice Noodles, 30-plus years old on Shijiayuan Road, is a genuine locals’ shop, not a tourist-menu version of one. Most mifen shops run 24 hours; breakfast or a 2am bowl both work.
Yangshuo beer fish: confirm the price before the fish is cooked
A whole live Li River fish, fried scales-on, braised in local Liquan beer with ginger, garlic, chili, and tomato. It’s priced per catty (jin, about 500g), typically ¥80-230, and the recurring scam here is a vague quote up front that turns into a much bigger bill once the fish is already in the pan. Ask for the per-catty price and the fish’s weight in writing, or on a receipt, before anyone starts cooking. Xie Dajie Beer Fish has around six locations and is a safer bet on consistency; Xie Sanjie Beer Fish, on West Street and Pantao Road, and Da Shifu Beer Fish are the other named options worth trying. Skip any beer fish stall on West Street itself that won’t quote a firm per-catty price before you order. Book a guided Yangshuo food tour if you’d rather have someone else handle the ordering and the price negotiation.
Stuffed river snails, ¥20-40
River snail meat minced with pork, mint, ginger, and Sanhua liquor, packed back into the shell and braised; suck the broth out first, then pick the meat free with a toothpick or your fingers. West Street stalls sell these honestly and cheaply, one of the few things there worth buying at the tourist price.
Oil tea, if you want the real version
Tea, ginger, and garlic (often with peanuts, rice, or corn) stir-fried in oil, pounded, boiled, and strained, served with puffed rice and dough twists. It’s central to Yao hospitality, and Gongcheng county’s version of it made UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022, a genuine credential rather than tourism copy. In Guilin city, Xin Guoji Oil Tea is a reliable chain option; expect roughly ¥25-30 a person with refills. Go in expecting bitter and savory, not a coffee substitute, and you won’t be disappointed.
Night markets: Shijiayuan over West Street’s night stalls
Shijiayuan stays busy past 11pm and is genuinely known as Guilin’s late-night snack strip; Yuexing Tribe, opened 2023 with 140-plus stalls, is newer and trendier but still locals-first. West Street’s own night market is priced like its sit-down restaurants, worth a walk-through but not where you should plan to eat.
Small named snacks worth tracking down
Water chestnut cake, about ¥3 a piece, from Laodongjiang or Ziyou Road; sour preserved fruit, about ¥15, at Jinbuhuan Sour Shop; and the Three Treasures, Sanhua rice liquor, Guilin chili sauce, and fermented bean curd, sold as gift boxes near Zhengyang Pedestrian Street if you want a real souvenir instead of a West Street trinket.
