Guilin 2 Day Itinerary (No Tourist Traps)

Two days is the honest minimum: one for Guilin’s own sights, one for the Li River cruise down to Yangshuo. It’s tight, so this skips the 4-star cruise upsell and any city extras you’d add with more time. Only got a weekend, this is the plan. More time available, the 3-day itinerary adds Yangshuo’s countryside, and the 4 through 7-day versions add Xingping and a Longji overnight.
Book these before you go
- The Li River cruise ticket (3-star, Mopanshan Pier), especially April-November, when it sells out days ahead.
- A Longji terrace guesthouse, if you’re tacking on the overnight rather than sticking to this 2-day plan.
- Impression Sanjie Liu tickets, if you want the evening river show worked into day 2.
- Hotels anywhere near Golden Week (1-7 October, 1-5 May 2026): book weeks ahead or find everything sold out.
Day 1: Guilin city, done properly and no more
Start with Reed Flute Cave (¥90 adult, one ticket variant shows ¥82, confirm at the gate), a 20°C illuminated limestone cave that gets crowded by midday, so go early. Follow with Elephant Trunk Hill (¥55) at the Li and Taohua Rivers’ confluence, the arch that gives the hill its name, and honestly just as recognizable from the free riverside path if the ticket price feels steep. Lunch on mifen, ¥3-10 a bowl, at a counter with no English menu rather than a sit-down spot near the ticketed sights, the noodles are the same, the markup isn’t. In the evening, the Two Rivers Four Lakes night cruise (¥210 adult, departs Wenchang Bridge 18:45 or Yuren 19:30, about 90 minutes) covers the illuminated old-city waterway loop and the Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas at Shanhu Lake. The cruise includes a staged cormorant-fishing show, watch it as theater, not as candid fishing, it’s a paid demonstration today, not a working trade.
Day 2: the Li River cruise to Yangshuo
Both cruise piers sit roughly 27-28km outside central Guilin, so factor the transfer into an early start. Book the 3-star cruise from Mopanshan Pier (¥215/adult) rather than the 4-star Zhujiang Pier option (¥360-480), you see the same karst between Yangdi and Xingping either way; the extra buys a meal and a nicer deck, not better scenery. It’s one-way downstream only, roughly 3.5-5 hours depending on the boat, arriving near Yangshuo’s West Street. Ignore the “upper deck upgrade” touts at the pier, seating is randomly assigned and there’s no legitimate upgrade to buy. West Street itself is worth a walk after dark, when it’s most atmospheric, but skip the English-menu beer fish restaurants right on it, confirm the per-catty price before the fish goes in the pot if you do eat there, and expect to pay more than a block off the main strip.

The concrete move for a rushed two days: pay the ¥215 cruise fare, skip the ¥480 one, and put the difference toward the night cruise or the show instead.
