Guilin's Overlooked Corners

Most “hidden gems” lists for Guilin just recycle Seven Star Park and Fubo Hill, both already on every tour bus itinerary. The genuinely under-visited picks sit a bit further out: a 2,200-year-old canal, a WWII history park, and an ancient trading town that never got West Street’s makeover.
Ling Canal (Lingqu): older than the Great Wall’s earliest sections
Built in 214 BC on the order of Qin Shi Huang, the Ling Canal connects the Xiang River (part of the Yangtze system) to the Li River (part of the Pearl River system), 36.4km of it, making it the world’s oldest contour canal and the first to link two separate river valleys. It sits on UNESCO’s tentative list , meaning it’s a recognized candidate, not yet a formally inscribed site, so don’t oversell the designation. It’s about 1.5 hours from Guilin in Xing’an County, roughly ¥30 including a boat tour (confirm current pricing before you go), and sees a fraction of the visitors that the city-centre hills do. Book a Ling Canal day tour if you’d rather not arrange the transfer yourself.
Flying Tiger Heritage Park: Guilin’s WWII history, mostly skipped
Guilin’s population swelled from around 70,000 to over 500,000 by 1944 as the city sheltered wartime intellectuals, and the American Volunteer Group, the Flying Tigers, flew late-war missions defending it. The Flying Tiger Heritage Park, opened March 2015 on the former Yangtang Airfield, covers this with a museum, preserved aircraft shelters, and cave-based command-post relics, a genuinely different side of the city from karst photography, and one almost no first-time visitor puts on their list. Confirm current hours before making the trip out, since museum schedules shift.
Daxu ancient town: the real ancient town, and it’s free
Yangshuo’s West Street gets sold as Guilin’s “ancient town” experience, but it’s a commercialized bar strip, not a historic one. Daxu, about 20-23km south of Guilin, actually dates to the early Northern Song dynasty (960-1127), over 1,000 years old, and flourished as a Republic-era trade hub with eight streets and up to 13 river docks. It’s free to walk, a 2.5km bluestone street lined with Ming and Qing buildings and the Qing-dynasty Wanshou Bridge. Buses run from Guilin’s South Bus Station (around 30 minutes, ¥10) or the Lingchuan 306 line from Guilin North (about 1.5 hours, ¥3). Go on a market day, dates ending in 2, 5, or 8, for the fullest version of it.
Xingping: quieter than the cruise-boat photo stop
Most Li River cruises treat Xingping as a five-minute deck photo, then move on. The old town itself, founded 1506 as a Ming-dynasty fishing village, rewards actually stopping: it was historically the Li River’s largest town, and the genuine ¥20-banknote view, Yellow Cloth Shoal, sits about 500m downstream from Mural Hill, best at sunrise between May and October. Buses run direct from Yangshuo (about 30 minutes, ¥15, every 15 minutes), so there’s no need to ride the full cruise just to see it.
