Guilin Day Trips Worth Taking

Three trips from Guilin earn their reputation: the Li River run to Yangshuo, an overnight at the Longji rice terraces, and Xingping’s old town. What doesn’t earn it is the way most itineraries sell the priciest version of each. The 4-star Li River cruise costs double the 3-star one for the same karst scenery plus a mediocre boat lunch, and Longji as a rushed day tour wastes the one thing that makes it worth the drive: sunrise or sunset light on the terraces.
Longji rice terraces: skip the day-tour rush
Longji (Longsheng) splits into two areas on one ¥80 combined ticket, which also covers Huangluo Yao Village. Ping’an is the Zhuang-built side, about 2 hours from Guilin, an easier walk to viewpoints like Nine Dragons and Five Tigers. Dazhai (Jinkeng) is the Yao side, about 2.5 hours out, wilder, with a cable car (¥60 one-way, ¥110 return) up to three viewpoints built specifically for sunrise and sunset. Day tours run to Ping’an and back in an afternoon, but that means arriving in flat midday light and missing the reason people photograph these terraces at all. Stay one night in a village guesthouse instead; it costs little more than the transport already did. Confirm the current gate rate before you go, and check terrace-view guesthouses before a weekend, since the good ones with a terrace view fill up.
Is the ¥480 Li River cruise worth it over the ¥215 one?
Both cruise tiers run the same one-way route from Guilin’s outskirts to Yangshuo, past the same Nine Horse Fresco Hill and Yellow Cloth Shoal scenery. The 3-star boat (¥215) gets you there in the same 4-5 hours with the same views from the deck. The 4-star boat (¥360-480) adds an included boat lunch and marginally better seating, nothing that changes the photos. Pay the premium only if a mediocre onboard meal genuinely saves you the hassle of eating in Yangshuo later.
Xingping: the day trip guides under-sell
Most itineraries treat Xingping as a cruise-boat photo stop rather than its own destination, which undersells it. The old town dates to 1506, and the actual ¥20-banknote view, Yellow Cloth Shoal, sits about 500m downstream from Mural Hill, free to see from the roadside (an elevated platform costs ¥5-10 for a cleaner angle). Buses run from Guilin’s South Bus Station (about 1.5 hours, ¥40) or from Yangshuo (about 30 minutes, ¥15, every 15 minutes), making Xingping an easy standalone half-day rather than something you only glimpse from a boat rail.
The cheaper cruise alternative
If the full Li River run feels like more boat than you need, Yulong River bamboo rafting out of Yangshuo is the honest budget swap: ¥200-320 per raft (not per person, confirm which before booking), 40-90 minutes on a smaller, calmer river, through villages and stone weirs. It’s a different river from the Li, so it’s not a like-for-like substitute for the Guilin-to-Yangshuo run, but it delivers similar karst scenery for a fraction of the 4-star cruise price. The karst you pass between Yangdi and Xingping genuinely sits inside the UNESCO-listed South China Karst property, added in 2014, though it’s a scientific geological listing rather than a single ticketed sight, so don’t expect a gate or plaque marking it. Book the Li River leg through the official WeChat mini-program “i游漓江” as one group order rather than splitting payments, since split bookings can land your group on different boats.
