Walking Tours of Old Charlotte Amalie
Old Charlotte Amalie is small enough to walk, but the heat and the hills decide how far you go. Below are a downtown loop, a Government Hill climb and a short synagogue stop, with notes on where a taxi is the better choice. Wear a hat, carry water, and start early on cruise-ship days.
The downtown loop
Begin at Fort Christian, the Danish fort begun in the 1670s, which is the oldest landmark in the territory. Entry costs US$10 and hours are usually Monday to Friday. Next door is Emancipation Garden, a free park with a bandstand and a replica of the Liberty Bell that recalls the proclamation of 3 July 1848. From there, turn onto Main Street, known by its Danish name Dronningens Gade, and browse the shops. The old warehouse alleys that run between Main Street and the waterfront are cooler and quieter, and they make a pleasant way back toward the harbour.
Government Hill
Government Hill, also called Kongens Quarter, rises behind the town. The area holds Frederick Lutheran Church and Government House, and visitors admire them as exteriors from the street. The 99 Steps on Store Taarne Gade were under renovation, and the Department of Public Works asked the public to stay off them, so take the road route and ask locally whether the steps have reopened. At the top of the steps stands Blackbeard’s Castle, the Skytsborg tower from the late 1600s, which local listings show with limited hours, so confirm before you go.
The synagogue on Crystal Gade
The Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas sits at 2116 Crystal Gade, within a few streets of the main shopping district. Visiting hours are Monday to Thursday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and Friday from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Tours are free and donations are asked. Show photo ID at the gate on a first visit, and note that the synagogue closes on Jewish holidays. Keep the visit quiet, as this is an active place of worship.
Walking toward Havensight
The waterfront walk east toward Havensight is long and hot, with little shade. On cruise-ship days, take a taxi for that stretch and walk the compact town centre instead. Fares are not fixed here, so agree on a price before you get in.
Guided options
Guided food, rum and history walks are available in town. Compare current listings and recent reviews before you book. Read more: Sightseeing in Charlotte Amalie .
Practical notes
Streets are narrow and uneven, and some pavements are steep. Cash is handy for taxis. Mineral sunscreen is the right choice around the reef, and the territory bans the retail sale of the three chemical filters oxybenzone, octinoxate and octocrylene. Storms are a risk from 1 June to 30 November.
