Family Days in Charlotte Amalie
Families in Charlotte Amalie get the best results from a simple plan: one big outing a day, a beach in the shade, and an early start before cruise-ship crowds fill the attractions. Prices below are for US dollars, and the figures come from the operators’ own pages.
Coral World Ocean Park
Coral World at Coki Point is the easiest rainy-day or hot-day choice. Adults aged 13 and over pay US$29, children aged 3 to 12 pay US$17, and under 3s are free. A family pass costs US$100. The park is open 9 am to 4 pm, and the ticket booth closes at 3 pm. It opens seven days a week from October to April and in July, and Tuesday to Saturday in May, June, August and September.
Children usually enjoy the Undersea Observatory, the touch tanks and the scheduled presentations: sea lions at 11:00 and 2:00, a shark feeding at 1:00 and a turtle talk. Time your arrival for the first show. The park also sells encounter programmes, Snuba and Sea Trek as paid extras under supervision. Parents decide whether those suit their children, and the exhibits are enough for a full visit without them.
Magens Bay
Magens Bay is a long, calm beach on the north shore, run by the Magens Bay Authority. Children under 12 enter free, non-resident adults pay US$7, and parking is US$2. It is open from 7 am to 5:30 pm. Rent chairs and umbrellas, or a cabana if you want guaranteed shade. Do not count on a lifeguard being present, so keep young swimmers close.
The Skyride
The Skyride from Havensight to Paradise Point costs US$34.95 for adults and US$24.95 for children. It runs rain or shine but may pause for high wind or lightning, and it mostly operates on cruise-ship days. Look at the dated schedule first, because some days are closed. Honeymoon Beach on Water Island
A small boat from Crown Bay Marina reaches Water Island in about 10 minutes and leaves hourly. You buy tickets from the captain in cash, and the last boat back is at 6:15 pm, so set a phone alarm. Honeymoon Beach is a short walk or golf-cart ride from the landing, and Dinghy’s Beach Bar rents chairs, umbrellas, paddleboards, kayaks and snorkel gear.
Zipline on St Peter Mountain
Tree Limin’ Extreme Zipline is on St Peter Mountain. Reseller prices start at about US$145 and reach US$209 in cruise packages. A minimum height of 44 inches applies, and weight limits apply as well, so check with the operator before you book for younger children.
Sun and reef care
Pack mineral sunscreen. The territory bans the retail sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone, octinoxate or octocrylene to protect its reefs. The territory is in hurricane season from 1 June to 30 November.
