Charlotte Amalie suits couples who want a few good views and a quiet beach rather than a packaged honeymoon programme. The town is a working port, so the romance comes from the harbour, the hills and the beaches a short ride away.
Harbour views from Paradise Point
The Skyride rises from Havensight to Paradise Point, where the summit looks out over the harbour and the cruise docks. Round-trip tickets are US$34.95 each for adults. The ride runs mainly on cruise-ship days, usually from 9 am, and it closes one hour after the last tram. That means an evening ride is not a given, so ask at the ticket window about the last tram and read the dated schedule at the operator’s site before you plan around it. It runs rain or shine but may pause for high wind or lightning.
A quiet beach on Water Island
Honeymoon Beach on Water Island is the best choice for a calm afternoon. A small boat leaves Crown Bay Marina hourly and reaches Phillips Landing in about 10 minutes, and the beach is a short walk or golf-cart ride beyond. Dinghy’s Beach Bar rents chairs, umbrellas, paddleboards, kayaks and snorkel gear, so you can set up for the day. The last boat back is at 6:15 pm and you pay the captain in cash, so plan your afternoon around the boat rather than the sunset.
Magens Bay early in the day
Magens Bay on the north shore is open daily from 7 am to 5:30 pm. Arriving at opening gives you a long, quiet stretch of sand before the day crowds. Non-resident adults pay US$7 and parking is US$2. Chairs, umbrellas and cabanas rent on site. Do not rely on a lifeguard being on duty, so swim within your limits.
Sunset sail and dinner
A sunset sail around the harbour is a common way to end the day, and the best choice is to compare current listings and read recent traveller reviews before you book. The same goes for a harbour-view dinner: restaurants change, so ask your hotel for a current recommendation and reserve ahead on cruise days.
