Staying Several Days Around Honiara
Honiara does not have a circuit of multi-day tours, so a longer stay is something you build yourself. Two shapes work: a base in the capital with guided outings on Guadalcanal, or a night or two on Tulagi in the Florida Islands. Anything in Western Province is a separate trip with its own flights. Prices are in Solomon Islands dollars (SBD).
Before you book
Entry rules are new. A tourist visa is applied for through the Solomon Islands Immigration visa portal, costs USD 100 and is valid for 3 months. You need an itinerary, a hotel booking and proof of funds. Portal delays have been reported, and a visa on arrival may be possible but is not guaranteed. Your passport must be valid for 6 months beyond arrival with 2 blank pages. A yellow fever certificate is needed if you arrive from a risk country. Read the current wording on the UK government entry requirements page and on the official portal.
Option one: a base in Honiara
Heritage Park Hotel has the restaurants Terrace Cafe, GG’s and Splash Bar & Grill. Coral Sea Resort & Casino is on the waterfront with two restaurants. From either you can spread the sights over several days.
- Day one: the Central Market (Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday) and the National Museum.
- Day two: the Bonegi wrecks, 12 km west, for snorkelling the shallow Kinugawa Maru.
- Day three: a guided trek to Mataniko Falls, arranged through the Honiara tourist office.
- Day four: a day on Savo Island or at Tenaru Falls, both with guides.
Sunday suits the Botanic Gardens, because the Central Market is shut.
Option two: Honiara plus Tulagi
Tulagi was the capital of the British protectorate. Raiders Hotel & Dive on the waterfront, which now also runs Raiders Dive Lodge, is the base. Rooms are reported at about SBD 800 to 1,500 a night, so ask for the current rate. The boat crossing takes about 1 to 2 hours. Unexploded weapons remain on Tulagi, so stay on tracks and leave metal alone. Divers should know that the only recompression chamber in Honiara is out of service after earthquake damage, and should ask their operator what emergency plan exists.
Western Province
Gizo and Munda are reached by flight on Solomon Airlines. They deserve their own itinerary of several days and cannot be added to a Honiara day.
Treks from town
Treks into the foothills, such as Tenaru Falls, are day outings with a guide, so you can sleep in town each night. Guides and kastom fees are paid in cash.
Money and health
Only Honiara, Gizo, Munda and Auki have ATMs, and only major hotels and restaurants take international cards, so carry small cash. Malaria, dengue and Zika are present.
