Multi Day Trips Based in Charlotte Amalie
Charlotte Amalie does not have set multi-day tours that start and end in town. Instead, visitors use it as a base and string together day trips on their own. A stay of three to five nights covers the main options without constant packing, and everything below can be booked separately with the operators.
Choosing a base
Stay near town or Havensight if you want shops, the harbour and short taxi rides to the cruise docks. Crown Bay on the west side puts you close to the Water Island boat and the airport, Cyril E. King Airport. The hills above town, Government Hill, Denmark Hill and Synagogue Hill, add steep streets and good views. Open-air taxis are common, so carry cash in US dollars.
A sample shape for several days
Day one: town. Walk the old streets, visit Fort Christian (US$10, usually Monday to Friday) and the synagogue on Crystal Gade, which opens Monday to Thursday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and Friday from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Call ahead for the fort at (340) 776-4566.
Day two: St John. Take the Red Hook ferry to Cruz Bay, about 20 minutes. The adult fare is US$8.15 each way, and boats run hourly from 6:30 am to 10 pm. Trunk Bay charges a US$5 amenity fee for visitors aged 16 and over, and the national park itself has no entrance fee.
Day three: north shore. Spend the morning at Magens Bay, open from 7 am to 5:30 pm with a US$7 non-resident fee, then ride the Skyride to Paradise Point in the afternoon if the posted schedule shows it running. The ride costs US$34.95 for adults and US$24.95 for children.
Day four: Water Island or Coral World. Water Island boats leave Crown Bay Marina hourly, and the last boat back is at 6:15 pm. Coral World at Coki Point charges US$29 for adults and US$17 for children, and its hours change by month.
Day five: British Virgin Islands. Bring a passport, complete the online ED card up to 72 hours ahead, and carry cash for the US$10 levy and the US$20 per person ferry departure fee.
Side trip to St Croix
St Croix is a separate island, and its attractions, including Estate Whim, Christiansted and Buck Island Reef National Monument, are not on St Thomas. Reach it by flight only if you want to add it. Read more: Day trips from Charlotte Amalie .
Season and flexibility
From 1 June to 30 November the Atlantic hurricane season applies, so leave dates flexible and watch ferry and cruise notices. Cruise-ship days are busiest at Havensight, the Skyride and downtown shops.
