A Walking Route Through Houmt Souk
Houmt Souk has no walled old city and no organised walking-tour circuit to follow. What it has is a compact town centre where the main sights lie within a few hundred metres of each other, so a self-guided walk of two to three hours covers nearly everything. This page lays out one route and the practical points that go with it.
Before you start
Walk in the morning. Summer heat is severe, shade is patchy and the souks are more pleasant before midday. Carry water, wear a hat and keep some Tunisian dinars (TND) in coins and small notes for tea, snacks and souvenirs. Friday is slower for shops, and the fortress and museum are closed that day, so a Friday walk is best spent in the markets and around the port.
The route
- Souk Errbaa. Start at the covered hall at the centre of town. It is a good place to see palm-leaf baskets, hats and woven goods before the day warms up.
- Jewellers’ lanes. The silver and filigree stalls sit close by. Looking costs nothing, and haggling is part of the buying.
- Central Market and fish auction. Head towards the port. Fish is sold by bidding, with a crier on a high chair. Timing varies, so go in the morning and ask locally. Stay out of the way of buyers.
- Fishing port and marina. Walk along the quay. Boats unload here, and the marina is where the Ras Rmel flamingo trips depart.
- Borj El Kebir. Finish at the fortress. It is a 15th-century Hafsid fort beside the port. Winter hours are 09:30 to 16:30 and summer hours 08:00 to 17:00. It is closed on Fridays and charges 8 TND for non-residents. A French-era obelisk marks the site of the former Tower of Skulls, a place for quiet reflection.
Optional additions
- Two mosques. Jamaa Ettrouk, the Mosque of the Turks, stands behind the church of Saint Joseph. Jamaa El Ghorba, the Mosque of the Strangers, is also in the centre. Both can be admired from the street only, since the prayer halls are not routinely open to non-Muslims.
- Heritage museum. The Museum of the Traditional Heritage of Djerba sits beside the Zaouia of Sidi Zitouni. It is open 09:30 to 16:30 in winter and 09:00 to 17:00 in summer, closed Fridays, 8 TND for non-residents.
What is not within walking distance
Erriadh, with its Djerbahood murals and the El Ghriba synagogue, is about 8 km away. Guellala, the pottery village, is about 20 km away, and Midoun is about 15 km away. None of these is a walk from the market. Use a metered taxi or a bicycle. Check that the meter is running, and ask locally about visiting arrangements at the synagogue.
Tips for the walk
- Dress modestly around the mosques and in the souks.
- Ask before photographing people or stalls.
- Keep valuables out of sight in crowded lanes.
- Cards are accepted at some hotels only, so rely on cash in the souks.
Guided options can be compared on GetYourGuide . The heritage authority publishes details for the fortress , and the fish market guide describes the auction.
