Walking Tours of Central San Salvador
Central San Salvador rewards a slow walk, and the Centro Histórico is the part to do on foot. Guided walks and self-guided loops follow much the same line. El Salvador’s state of exception is still in force, so carry a copy of your passport photo page and expect police ID checks. The UK FCDO safety page reports petty crime and robberies, so keep valuables out of sight and walk in daylight.
The Centro Histórico loop
A good loop links six stops in this order: Plaza Morazán, the Teatro Nacional, Plaza Gerardo Barrios, BINAES, the Palacio Nacional and Plaza Libertad. The pieces sit close enough to walk between, and you can stop at any one for as long as you like.
- Plaza Morazán and the Teatro Nacional. The theatre dates from 1917 and its exterior is worth a few minutes. Night guided tours of the interior were scheduled from 10 October to 1 November 2026, meeting at Plaza Morazán from 18:00 to 24:00.
- Plaza Gerardo Barrios. The square the cathedral faces. BINAES is close by.
- BINAES. The national library is free, open 24 hours a day and has a rooftop terrace on level 7 with a restaurant and a gallery.
- Palacio Nacional. Guided visits run from Tuesday to Sunday, with fees of $1 for Salvadorans, $3 for Central Americans and resident foreigners and $5 for non-resident foreigners. Check the Ministry of Culture schedule for hours.
- Plaza Libertad. The last stop on the loop.
The cathedral and the crypt
The Metropolitan Cathedral on Plaza Barrios holds the tomb of Saint Óscar Romero in its crypt. Hours are about 08:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 18:00 on Sunday. Stay quiet and respectful inside, and check the hours before you go. The crypt website lists the address as 2ª Avenida Sur #213.
Colonia San Benito and Zona Rosa
The neighbourhoods of Colonia San Benito and Zona Rosa make a gentler stroll than the old centre. MUNA, the museum, charges $10 to non-resident foreigners, $3 to resident foreigners and $1 to Salvadorans. Check opening hours before you walk over.
