Day Trips from San Salvador
The capital works well as a base because several sites sit within a day’s reach. Distances below are measured from the city centre and are approximate. Start early. El Salvador’s state of exception is still in force, so carry a copy of your passport photo page and expect police ID checks.
Closest: Lake Ilopango, about 16 km east
Lake Ilopango offers boat rides, kayaking and diving. Boat rides cost about $15 per half hour in 2023. A tourist boat capsized there in 2022 and drownings have been reported, so use a licensed operator, wear a life jacket and keep to the boat rather than swimming.
Joya de Cerén, about 36 km
Joya de Cerén is a UNESCO World Heritage village that was buried by ash from the Loma Caldera eruption around 600 CE. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 and closed on Mondays. Foreigners pay $10, Central Americans $3 and Salvadorans $1, according to the elsalvador.com fee report .
San Andrés, about 32 to 35 km
San Andrés is a Maya site open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00. The foreigner fee is about $3 to $5, so carry small bills. Combined Maya route tours pair it with Joya de Cerén.
Tazumal and Casa Blanca, about 80 km west
Both are in Chalchuapa, and both open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00. Tazumal is a Maya archaeological site with a foreigner fee of about $5. Casa Blanca has a small museum. At roughly 80 km, this is a long day rather than a quick half-day, and it is easiest on a combined Maya route tour. The elsalvador.com Chalchuapa guide lists hours and the Salvadoran fee.
Ruta de las Flores, Juayúa at about 85 km
The Ruta de las Flores is a scenic road of roughly 32 to 36 km. Juayúa lies 2 to 3 hours from the capital by road. Its weekend food fair runs on Saturday and Sunday in the main plaza, so plan the trip for a weekend. Ataco and Apaneca fit into the same day if you start early.
El Tunco and La Libertad, 35 to 45 km south
These Pacific beaches are not in San Salvador. Rip currents are strong at El Tunco, drownings have occurred along the coast, and lifeguards are few. FCDO describes Pacific swimming as dangerous, with the worst conditions at La Bocana de San Diego. Visitors who do not surf should stay out of the water. If you want to try surfing, book lessons through a surf school.

Practical tips
Use official taxis or ride-hailing rather than public buses. Rainy season, from June to November, brings floods and landslides that can slow roads. Avoid walking alone on remote trails.
