Guided Attraction Tours in San Salvador
Guided outings in San Salvador fall into four groups: a walk through the historic centre, a visit to the sites linked to Saint Óscar Romero, a day on the Maya route west of the city and an evening tour of the national theatre. Each can be booked as a guided visit or done on your own with a taxi. El Salvador’s state of exception is still in force, so carry a copy of your passport photo page and expect police ID checks.
Centro Histórico guided walk
A guided walk through the old centre usually links the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Palacio Nacional, the Teatro Nacional and Plaza Gerardo Barrios. A guide helps with the stories behind each building and with timing, because opening days differ.
The Palacio Nacional offers guided visits from Tuesday to Sunday, not every day. Fees are $1 for Salvadorans, $3 for Central Americans and resident foreigners and $5 for non-resident foreigners. Hours change, so check the Ministry of Culture schedule before you go, and see the elsalvador.com report on the palace for the fee list.
Romero pilgrimage
Saint Óscar Romero’s tomb lies in the crypt of the Metropolitan Cathedral on Plaza Barrios, and the crypt’s own address is 2ª Avenida Sur #213. Crypt hours are about 08:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 18:00 on Sunday, so check before you set out. The cathedral crypt page gives details.
The Divina Providencia hospital holds the small chapel where Romero was killed on 24 March 1980, along with the rooms of the Centro Monseñor Romero. University students lead the tours there. Confirm hours and any fee in advance. These are places of prayer and memory, so dress modestly, speak quietly and treat the visit as a pilgrimage rather than entertainment.
Maya route to the west
Combined Maya route tours pair Joya de Cerén, San Andrés and Tazumal in one long day. Joya de Cerén is a UNESCO site about 36 km from the city. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 and costs $10 for foreigners, $3 for Central Americans and $1 for Salvadorans. San Andrés keeps the same Tuesday to Sunday hours, and its foreigner fee is about $3 to $5. Tazumal at Chalchuapa is about 80 km west, also open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00, with a foreigner fee of about $5. The nearby Casa Blanca site has the same hours and a small museum.
The Joya de Cerén visitor report lists the current fees. Because Tazumal is far, a combined tour is often easier than three separate taxi rides. Compare departures on GetYourGuide .
Teatro Nacional night tour
The Teatro Nacional dates from 1917 and faces Plaza Morazán. Night guided tours were scheduled from 10 October to 1 November 2026, from 18:00 to 24:00, meeting at Plaza Morazán. Ask locally whether another run is planned, and ask the ticket price when you book.
Tips for choosing a tour
- Ask which sites are included and whether entry fees are extra, since foreigner rates differ from Salvadoran rates.
- Pick a licensed guide or official taxi, as FCDO advises against relying on unofficial taxis.
- Carry small dollar bills for entry fees.
