Walking Routes Through Verona Old Town
Walking Routes Through Verona
Verona’s centre is compact and mostly flat, so three self-guided routes cover most of it. Each can be walked in half a day with coffee stops.
Route 1: Piazza Bra to Sant’Anastasia, about 1.5 km
Start at Piazza Bra beside the Arena, then follow the Via Mazzini promenade towards Piazza delle Erbe. Pass under the Arco della Costa, with its whale rib, into the square. Continue to Piazza dei Signori and the Dante statue, then look for the Scaliger Tombs on Via Arche Scaligere. Finish at the church of Sant’Anastasia. Via Mazzini is crowded and pickpockets work it, so keep bags closed.
Add the Torre dei Lamberti at the Erbe end if you want a view. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 10:30 to 19:00 at weekends.
Route 2: the Adige bend, about 3.5 km
This flat loop starts at Castelvecchio, crosses the Ponte Scaligero and follows the Lungadige along the river. It continues to the basilica of San Zeno and returns the same way or by a parallel street. San Zeno holds Mantegna’s altarpiece and Brioloto’s rose window. Check church hours before you plan the stop, since visitor access works around services. Castelvecchio itself is closed on Mondays.
Route 3: Veronetta and Colle San Pietro
Cross the Ponte Pietra, the Roman bridge that is open only to pedestrians. The Teatro Romano and its museum are at Regaste Redentore 2, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays. Above them, the path to Castel San Pietro is a steep stair climb, so wear sturdy shoes. If you prefer, take the funicular from Via Fontanelle Santo Stefano 6; it runs daily 10:00 to 21:00 from April to 25 October and 10:00 to 17:00 from 26 October to March. The terrace at the top is free, and the funicular page lists the closures.
Guided walks
Local guides run group walks, and prices vary by operator, so compare options before booking. A guide is worth it for the Roman layers of the city, which are easy to miss on your own.
Walking tips
- Wear comfortable shoes, since much of the old town is stone paving.
- The ZTL covers the old centre, where driving is allowed only with a booked permit. Walk instead.
- In July and August, start before 10:00 to beat the heat and the crowds.
- Juliet’s courtyard bans graffiti, gum and padlocks, and fines apply.
- The VeronaCard (33 EUR for 24 hours or 38 EUR for 48 hours) includes city buses, which is handy for the walk back from the hill.
