Siena Attraction Tours and Special Access
Attraction tours in Siena
Most of Siena’s guided experiences are run by the institutions that own the buildings, so the best tickets come from the Duomo’s own Opera, the city council and the contrada neighbourhoods rather than from a general tour desk. Here is what is on offer, with the prices published for 2026.
Porta del Cielo, the Duomo roof walk
The Porta del Cielo is a guided route through the upper galleries of the cathedral and out onto the roof terraces, with views over the city towards Monte Amiata. It runs from 1 March to 6 January and costs a flat EUR 21 for adults and EUR 6 for children aged 7 to 11, with under 7s free. That one price already includes all the museum sites on the OPA SI PASS, so you do not need to buy a second ticket. The Opera does not publish a minimum age or a duration. The route uses stairs and narrow walkways, so it is a poor choice for wheelchair users. Book on the Duomo’s own page.
Museo Civico and the Torre del Mangia
The Palazzo Pubblico tour is self-guided. The Museo Civico costs about EUR 10, or EUR 11 if pre-booked, and the Torre del Mangia is about EUR 10 on its own. The combined Museo Civico and Torre ticket is EUR 15 for one day, and adding Santa Maria della Scala brings the three-site ticket to EUR 20 over two days. The tower cannot be booked online: you buy at the Palazzo Pubblico ticket office on the day, and climbs leave every 45 minutes for up to 25 people. The tower must be the first entry used on any combined ticket. Children under 11 are free on the municipal sites.
Santa Maria della Scala
This former pilgrim hospital faces the cathedral. Its Pellegrinaio hall is covered in 15th-century frescoes of hospital life, and the lower levels hold the national archaeological museum. A standalone price is not confirmed for 2026, so use the Museo Civico combination or check the museum site. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month.
Contrada museums
Each of Siena’s 17 contrade has its own museum and oratory, with Palio banners, costumes and archives. They are private, so visits are arranged by email or through a local guide rather than by turning up. The Tartuca museum at Via Tommaso Pendola 21 takes bookings at museo@tartuca.it , and other contrade run their own museums; the Oca, Nicchio and Chiocciola museums are among those open to arranged visits. Prices vary by contrada. Do not wear the scarf of a rival contrada in a neighbourhood.
Music and water heritage
The Accademia Musicale Chigiana at Via di Città 89 offers guided visits of Palazzo Chigi-Saracini, with its art and instrument collections. Ticket prices change, so confirm with the Accademia. The Museo dell’Acqua at Fonti di Pescaia, which explains how the Bottini aqueducts worked, opens by reservation only on 0577 292614, and price and hours are not confirmed. For a walk to the monumental fountains, Fontebranda dates from 1246 and Fonte Gaia sits on the Campo.
The Pinacoteca
Siena’s national picture gallery, the Pinacoteca Nazionale, has been closed for works since 26 January 2026 and no reopening date has been announced. Check the museum site before planning around it.
