Multi-Day Trips Using Verona as a Base
Multi-Day Trips Using Verona as a Base
Verona sits where the Milan to Venice and Brenner to Bologna routes cross, so three or four nights here can anchor a wider trip. This page outlines three multi-day plans, with the logistics that matter. Journey times are approximate, so confirm them on Trenitalia before booking.
Veneto art cities, 3 to 4 days
Stay in Verona and make day outings by train.
- Vicenza: about 25 minutes by Frecciarossa, or 34 to 39 minutes by regionale veloce. Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico and Basilica Palladiana are the highlights.
- Padua: the Scrovegni Chapel is the headline, and booking is mandatory, so reserve a slot before you travel.
- Venice: Venice Santa Lucia is about 1 hour 10 minutes by Frecciarossa or Italo, or about 1 hour 30 by regionale veloce.
Keep one day in Verona itself for the Arena, Castelvecchio and the old-town squares. Castelvecchio is closed on Mondays.
Lake Garda and Monte Baldo, 3 days
Base yourself on the lake for a night or two. Peschiera del Garda is 13 to 19 minutes from Verona by train, and Sirmione and Malcesine add castles and views. The Malcesine cable car climbs to 1,760 m and costs about 30 EUR (28 online), though the operator’s label does not say whether this is one way or return, so check at funiviedelbaldo.it . It runs seasonally; the 2026 summer season ran from 4 April to 1 November. Sirmione is not a quick trip from Verona: allow about 40 minutes by car, with no direct train.
Trentino extension
The VeronaCard (33 EUR for 24 hours, 38 EUR for 48 hours) gives free entry to MART in Rovereto, Casa Depero, the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento and MUSE. Each site can be entered once. The official terms are on museicivici.comune.verona.it .
Dolomites, 2 to 3 days
This is a separate trip rather than a Verona day trip. There is no rail line into Val Gardena. Bolzano is about 2 hours from Verona by train, then you continue by bus. Seceda and Alpe di Siusi are reached by lift; check timetables and prices with the lift operators for your dates.
Where to stay
Choose a Verona hotel near Porta Nuova station if most of your trips are by rail, and book early for June to September, when the Arena festival fills rooms. Traffic is restricted inside the old centre: the ZTL allows entry only with a booked permit, and the notified fine is about 98.50 EUR. If you drive, park outside at Parcheggio Centro on Via Campo Marzo or Parcheggio Cittadella on Piazza Cittadella. Parking fills on show nights.
Planning tips
- Strikes can interrupt rail travel, so check notices the day before each long leg.
- Pack for lake and mountain weather, which can differ sharply from the city.
- Leave luggage at your Verona hotel when you take overnight side trips.
