Day Trips From Verona by Train and Bus
Day Trips From Verona
Verona sits on the Milan to Venice rail line, which makes it a good base for day trips. Journey times below come from timetable listings, so check Trenitalia before you travel. Fares and local bus numbers change, so none are printed here.
Lake Garda
Peschiera del Garda is the nearest lake town, about 13 to 19 minutes by regional train. From Peschiera or Desenzano you can continue to Sirmione by local transport. Driving to Sirmione takes about 40 minutes, so allow a full day rather than a quick hop. Sirmione has a Scaliger castle and the Grotte di Catullo; a recent guide puts the Grotte at about 10 EUR and the castle at 6 to 8 EUR, but hours and joint-ticket prices vary, so confirm them on the day. Lake Garda beaches are mostly pebble and stone rather than sand. Thermal baths at Aquaria are run by Terme di Sirmione .
Valpolicella
Wineries cluster around San Pietro in Cariano, Fumane and Negrar, and a car or organised tour makes the visit easier. Book tastings ahead, since estates keep limited hours. The Parco delle Cascate di Molina is a waterfall nature park rather than a canyoning site; entry is about 7 EUR, a combined ticket with the Grotta di Fumane is about 14 EUR, and the park closes in rain. See parcodellecascate.it for the season.
Soave
Soave is a walled town with medieval Scaliger walls and a castle. The castle has been listed as open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 18:00, but check before you go. Reaching it by train means getting off at San Bonifacio and continuing locally, so confirm connections.
Mantua
Mantua is a UNESCO Gonzaga capital about 45 minutes away on a regional train. Palazzo Ducale costs 18 EUR full price from 2 January 2026 and 11 EUR reduced. The Camera degli Sposi needs a booked time slot, and the ticket stays valid for one month. Palazzo Te holds Giulio Romano’s Fall of the Giants; its price is reported between 11 and 15 EUR, so check before you go.
Vicenza
Vicenza is the Palladian city, about 25 minutes by Frecciarossa or 34 to 39 minutes by regionale veloce. Visit the Teatro Olimpico (1585, by Scamozzi) and the Basilica Palladiana, then consider the walk of about 20 minutes from the centre to La Rotonda.
Venice
Venice Santa Lucia is about 1 hour 10 minutes by Frecciarossa or Italo and about 1 hour 30 by regionale veloce. It is possible as a long day trip, though an overnight stay gives more time.
Tips for all trips
Buy rail tickets from Trenitalia. Strikes occasionally disrupt trains, so look at the official notices the day before. Verona Porta Nuova is about 1.5 km from Piazza Bra, so plan the walk or a city bus back for evening returns.
