Romantic Weekend in Verona
A Romantic Weekend in Verona
Verona’s romantic reputation comes from Shakespeare, but the city delivers on its own terms: stone bridges, hill terraces, candlelit restaurants and a Roman arena that hosts opera on summer nights. Here is how to put a weekend together.
Sunset at Castel San Pietro
The terrace at Piazzale Castel San Pietro is free and looks over the Adige bend and the red-roofed old town. Walk up the stairs, or take the funicular from Via Fontanelle Santo Stefano 6. The funicular runs daily 10:00 to 21:00 from April to 25 October, then 10:00 to 17:00 from 26 October to March, so in the winter months the last ride is early and you should check sunset times. Ristorante Re Teodorico on the hill is listed for dinner; confirm its opening days before you go.
Where to stay
- Due Torri Hotel Baglioni, Piazza Sant’Anastasia 4, is a 5-star hotel with a rooftop terrace.
- Relais de Charme Il Sogno di Giulietta, Via Cappello 23, sits in the Juliet courtyard. Confirm evening courtyard access with the hotel, and do not expect balcony access.
- NH Collection Palazzo Verona, Via Adua 8, has Roman remains visible under glass, according to guest reviews.

Dinner
Casa Perbellini 12 Apostoli, at Vicolo Corticella San Marco 3, holds three Michelin stars. It is open Tuesday to Friday for lunch and dinner and Saturday for lunch, and it needs booking well ahead; see its Michelin Guide listing . Il Desco has one Michelin star. For local dishes, try risotto all’Amarone and pastissada de caval at Antica Bottega del Vino, Vicolo Scudo di Francia 3.
An evening at the Arena
The Arena Opera Festival runs from 11 June to 11 September 2027. All stone-step seats are numbered, so you can book two together. The cheapest start from about 28 EUR with early booking; use shop.arena.it and avoid resale sites. The 2027 titles include La Traviata, Carmen, Aida and a new ballet of Romeo and Juliet. Bring ID.
Juliet’s House
Visit by timed booking only at verona.coopculture.it. The 5 EUR ticket covers the courtyard and balcony, and the 12 EUR ticket adds the interiors. Leave the walls, gum and padlocks alone, since fines apply. The courtyard bronze is a copy made in 2014 of the 1972 original by Nereo Costantini.
Ponte Pietra at dusk
The Roman bridge is closed to cars, so it is a pleasant walk. It dates to the 1st century BC, was blown up in 1945 and was rebuilt with recovered stones in 1957 to 1959. The Teatro Romano stands just across it.
A spa day at Sirmione
Terme di Sirmione runs the Aquaria thermal spa. Sirmione is about 40 minutes from Verona by car, with no direct train, so plan transport ahead. See termedisirmione.com .
