Victoria Falls Trips of Two to Seven Days
Victoria Falls Town makes a good base for trips of two to seven days. The falls and the gorge fill two days, Chobe adds a third, and Hwange turns the trip into a week. These are sample plans built from the activities that operate here.
Two days: the falls and the gorge
Day 1. Walk the rainforest trail in the morning, when the light is good and the paths are quiet. Entry is about US$58 for international visitors. Book the Flight of Angels helicopter for the afternoon. Finish with a Zambezi sunset cruise.
Day 2. Spend the morning on the water with a rafting day, or jump from the bridge with Shearwater. In the afternoon, browse the shops at Elephant’s Walk, then book dinner at the Boma, which runs in the evening only.
Three to four days: add Chobe and Zambia
Spend days one and two in town as above. On day three, take a full-day trip to Chobe National Park in Botswana, with a river boat in the morning and a game drive in the afternoon. On day four, cross the bridge for Livingstone and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. In the low-water season, Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island is open, and flights home can follow in the afternoon.
Five to seven days: the Golden Triangle
- Two nights in Victoria Falls Town for the falls and adventure activities.
- Two nights near Chobe National Park, in the Kasane area of Botswana, on the riverfront.
- Two to three nights in Hwange National Park, where lodges and tented camps offer game drives.
The road from town to Kasane takes about one to one and a half hours through the Kazungula border.
Visas and money
The KAZA UniVisa costs US$50 and is valid for 30 days. It allows multiple crossings between Zimbabwe and Zambia and a same-day trip into Botswana through Kazungula. It is voided by an overnight stay in Botswana, so the Kasane nights in the five to seven day plan need separate Botswana entry. Only some nationalities can buy it. Check the Zimbabwe eVisa portal or the Zambia Department of Immigration for where and how to get it before you travel.
Prices are quoted in US dollars. The ZiG is Zimbabwe’s local currency, so bring cash as a backup to cards.
When to go
- August to December is low water. Rafting runs the full course, the gorge is clear and the falls carry less water.
- March to May brings the flood. The spray is heavy, rafting is closed and viewpoints can disappear into mist.
- Devil’s Pool usually opens from about mid-August to mid-January. Dates vary each year.
Safety
Do not walk in town after dark, because elephants and buffalo graze in the streets. Malaria is present, so take medical advice. Check current government travel advice, such as the UK FCDO guidance for Zimbabwe , before booking.
