Things to Do in Luquillo: Beach and Kiosks
Luquillo sits on Puerto Rico’s northeast coast, about 45 to 60 minutes by road from San Juan airport depending on traffic. A reef-sheltered public beach, a strip of food kiosks, a surf beach and the El Yunque rainforest corridor are all within roughly 15 minutes of each other. Prices are in US dollars, cards and ATH Movil are widely used, and small bills still help at the kiosks.
Balneario La Monserrate
This is Luquillo Beach, a palm-lined public beach where an offshore reef keeps the water calm. Parking is $4 per car ($8 per bus), paid by card or ATH Movil, so bring a card rather than cash. Hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the off-season (about September to December) and seven days a week until 5:30 p.m. in the high season (about January to August).
Outdoor rinse showers are free. The bath house, with restrooms, showers, changing rooms and lockers, charges a small fee. A trained lifeguard works the accessible Mar sin Barreras area Wednesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so swim near it when you can. Red and yellow flags mean stay out of the water. Chairs and umbrellas can be rented, and kayak and jet-ski vendors operate to the west. Hours and fees are listed at Puerto Rico Day Trips .
Los Kioskos de Luquillo
About 60 numbered open-air kiosks stand on the ocean side of PR-3 beside the balneario, roughly five minutes east of the PR-191 turn for El Yunque. Expect frituras, mofongo and piƱa coladas served in a pineapple. A few kiosks are vacant or sell only souvenirs.
Most kiosks open around 11 a.m. or noon and close between 9 and 10 p.m. It is busier on weekends, and some kiosks close on Monday and Tuesday, so check before you go. Numbers to look for: #2 La Parrilla, #20 Terruno, #22 Jibaros, #38 Edelweiss and #42 Ceviche Hut. A kiosk map is at Puerto Rico Day Trips .
Surfing at Playa La Pared
La Pared is the surf and bodyboard beach on the town’s beachfront. Rip currents occur here regularly, so it suits surfers and strong swimmers better than small children. Check the National Weather Service San Juan rip current forecast before you paddle out, and if you are caught in a rip, swim parallel to shore.
Two schools teach at La Pared: Surfing Puerto Rico , whose lessons run about 2.5 hours for ages 8 and up with equipment and snacks included, and Rainforest Beach Lessons. Ask each school for current prices.
Horses and ATVs at Carabali Rainforest Park
Carabali Rainforest Park sits in the Luquillo foothills. Resellers list horseback rides from about $75 for 1 hour and from about $116 for 2 hours, and a beach ride for about $165. ATV tours start at about $94 per ATV for 1 hour and rise to about $147 for a 650cc machine, with 1 or 2 riders per ATV. Treat these as starting prices and confirm before you book.
Las Paylas rock slides
Las Paylas are natural rock slides in a river and a common stop on tours. Parking has been reported at about $5 at a private home, paid in cash. Current access can change, so check before you go. The rocks are slippery, and water can rise within minutes even when it is not raining where you stand. Leave the stream if the water turns murky or starts to climb.
Weather and seasons
Hurricane season runs from June to November. Flash floods and rip currents are the hazards that catch visitors most often.
